Default No Drive on Disco 2.

My gearbox had quite a harsh change from 1 to 2nd . Did an oil change and added 4 tubes of Dr. Tranny, to see if it will buy me some time on the gearbox. After 2 days of driving the harsh change was 80% better and everything was ok. Yesterday it felt that the I needed some refs to get going , after that all ok. This morning higher refs to get going and 20m on basically no gears. Any advise out there thanks. The 2 green lights started to flash ( Sport and Drive)

Usually if no drive and the gearbox is full of oil, the oil pump is gone. Did you fill the box correctly, add oil while somebody who loves you goes through the gears slowly, till no more oil goes In?

The m& a lights flash when gearbox ecu is not getting enough power. Is your battery fully charged?

You should still be able to drive with M&S flashing though..

If it's the pump, R25k to redo the box.... The pumps are scarce, the box has been discontinued.

Pump might be ok but clutch plates burnt and resulting in slipping,

The box is trying . so it is not that there is no life.
Everything was fine except the harsh changeover to 2nd gear.
Replace the oil and added Dr. tranny on Wednesday, there was a huge improvement on the changeover after 50km , a bit of slip on Friday and then all ok.
Saturday pulling away on a bit of a uphill on my driveway, lots of slip and then stop on the uphill.
it will probably move a bit when on level surface.
Battery full. Not sure if they filled box properly.

Maybe to much Dr. Tranny ( 4 tubes)?
    Did not replace the filter.

    I live in Krugersdorp/Roodepoort area.

Any gbox fundis in my area?

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Take the car to Sean at the gearbox co in Randburg. It will cost you R2500 for a service, they replace oil, filter and clean the solenoid as well (might cost more)..

When last did you have the filter changed? I do mine every 50 000 km or 2-3 years.

Select low range and see if the the car will then drive.
With M+S lights on, the gearbox will sit in 3rd gear (or is it second) and pulling away is a major PITA with so much turbo lag, especially on a uphill.

    Hi tried that , thanks.

Seems that the Dr. tranny might have dislodge all the gunk of the past 16 years and caused a blockage or something else went wrong.
Whatever the case is the box must come out.

What annoys me is that 5 years ago I took it to a well known Indy in Randburg for a service and mentioned to him that the Madmen alarm went off whilst towing a boat back from Mozambique.

He just shrugged his shoulders and mumbled something about a closed box.

Anyone else with suggestions on the recon of the box or a box exchange in the Westrand preferably

Thanks for all the feedback so far..

Couldn't you try replacing the filter, flush the oil(using the special technique MikeBob I think it is does) with new and some new tyranny doctor?

On of the guys from ZF is a member on the forum and is very helpful.
Get hold of ZF in Edenvale, I'm sure they will be able to advise you.

I would drain and flush the gearbox, change the filter and fill as per the manual with only the specified oil. See what it does after that and then decide. It will be cheaper than removing the box for an overhaul.

I know on some of the yank boxes you can install a gauge to check line or pump pressure can you do that with the ZF auto that way know it pump working, or possible blocked filter,

It may be the solenoid is gunked up and needs a good cleaning.. Drop the sump, replace filter, refill and see if it goes. Not a difficult job, but painful.

Even if you take the box out yourself it should still go to gearbox Co....

The Discovery td5 is fitted with the ZF 4HP22 transmission. The best and first step would be to open the inspection hole on the bell housing and see if the torque converter is turning, if yes then you know the flex plate is not broken. Next step would be to check if the transmission oil pump has pressure when the engine is turning. If my memory serves me well, there is a plug on the side of the transmission close to the bell housing which takes a 5mm Allen screw, if you remove that screw and connect a pressure gauge it should indicate if there is oil pressure. You can also remove one of the transmission cooler pipes while the engine is turning to see if there is a significant flow rate. There were some issues on these vehicles where the flex plate cracked/sheared off or the torque converter tangs broke the transmission hydraulic pump which then lead to now drive. Unfortunately these transmissions are not in production anymore which makes the parts very expensive - we rarely ever work on these transmissions. You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions or need a parts list on the unit etc.
