Very valid points and I agree, my Wrangler was a pure joy as well and I’d love to have it back, we have made plenty memories. For me personally the FJ is the one I miss the most and having to choose I’ve opted for the FJ rather.

Saying that, my Wrangler was a 2001 and I never owned a newer Rubicon, especially a 4-door.

Difficult choice. Which one puts the biggest smile on you face

I'm on my 2nd FJ so excuse me if I am a little biased I must add that I have used used a Wrangler for a few weeks in Dubai and have done a few hundred miles in one in Oman, mostly offroad, so I qualify to comment a bit.
The FJ/Wrangler comparison has been over discussed amongst me and my mates(including two ex Rubi owners) and this is our collective take on things...
Unless you - do grade 4/5 trails every weekend, hate Toyota and the look of the FJ or absolutely have to have a Wrangler with a star on the door then the FJ is the better vehicle for you.
The FJ is closer to the Unlimited offroad than most people realise (or want to admit) and its is a lot better as a tar cruiser.
    Better in sand.
The FJ is safer, and will be less likely to leave you stranded as its more reliable.
Comes with a roof rack and easy to mount aftermarket rack.
    Standard 159L tank.
    General build quality is better.
    Back seats more comfortable.
    Its a Toyota - dealers/spares...
    Faster

The 3.6 JK is a brilliant motor but needs to be revved, its pretty bullet proof and I have never heard of one konking, my one mate had a very irritating, intermittent wiring loom problem that took a while but was sorted under warranty.
Its slightly better on fuel but not much(comparison tested)
Can tow more than the FJ
I disagree with some posts about resale and servicing costs - mates JK's out of service costs were almost identical to the FJ and the resale was very good IMO!! I do think that general spares will end up burning you though??
It really is a lekka place to be on a trail!!
I know some here said that the back doors are ok but IMO they can become flippen irritating with kids......also, a game viewer it ain't if you are sitting in the back

Drive both then get the FJ!!
PS. stay away from the Frod

First of all I would split those 4 choices into 2 groups: do you want a head purchase (Everest & Fortuner) or are you going with the heart (Jeep & FJ)?

Doesn't sound like you are looking for a mom's taxi, so I guess Jeep & FJ might be top of the list?

I don't know the Jeep and don't want to contribute to all the preconceptions of reliability and such.
I do know the FJ a little and find it bags of fun. I think it got more range than the Jeep, due to the 2nd fuel tank since 2013, I take it you would buy new or at least a recent model.

Okay so ive narrowed down my search to the Fj and Jeep.

This will definitely not be a moms taxi. So i am heading towards my heart, This will mainly be a toy. I have a audi as a platkar.

My kids are my two 4 legged friends. So im not worried about the back doors. I kinda like the suicide look.

Where will one buy accessories for the FJ cruisers?

There is millions of sites for the Rubi but not for the FJ?

I have driven both the Fj and Jeep. This is honestly such a hard decision for me as they are both very much similar.

    Start a poll

    So far:

    9 votes for the FJ
    2 votes for the JK

the rest are all on the fence

Buy the FJ, because the forum says so.

Once you have the FJ...if you go that route... join the SA FJ Cruiser Club WhatsApp group for instant advice on anything FJ. Until then, work through THIS thread. I too had my eye on a JK a few years ago. The issues I had with my Land Rover was just still too fresh in my mind.... I have a huge issue with mechanical stuff failing in the most inopportune times placing my life and that of my family in danger... as was the case with the LR I had.

It took 9 years of owning a V6 Hilux to gain my trust in terms of reliability. Not one issue in the 9 years besides the Cartrack draining my battery.... I am really enjoying the FJ. Obviously bias plays a huge role in all of these feedback posts....it is only human... but the FJ is really as good as everybody claims .

A JK Wrangler is built by Jeep not Landrover!

Until the day you take the roof off the Jeep or even just the two Freedom panels in the front..... then you will know why you bought the Jeep instead!

    agreed

There is no comparison between LR and Jeep build quality when it comes to mechanical robustness.

I had an FJ and I agree with Jelo - the doors are stupid. It's a lovely vehicle but the doors disqualified it for my use, if you use it for game viewing - and especially if you also like photography - the doors are a deal-breaker.

I now have a 76 Cruiser and for my use it is a far better car. 4 people can actually spend time in the car and they will all be able to see an animal next to the road. In the FJ, because the windows are so low, they were a big frustration for me in these sort of situations. I had the FJ for less than a year.

The FJ is not the right vehicle for lets say 4 avid wildlife photographers no. Nor would a SWB Jeep wrangler be good for that as an example. Those vehicles appeal to a different market segment.
Saying the doors on the FJ are stupid across the board does not make sense.
The OP has a wife and two dogs.
I suppose the dogs will be in the back by the small windows, and him and the wife in the front.
The rear doors therefore should not be an issue for him whatsoever. Unless i am missing something?

    You are asking about accessories.

You get accessories for the FJ Cruiser at any place that sells 4x4 accessories. Frontrunner makes roof racks & drawer systems, there is a wide variety of front bumpers e.g. Gobi, ARB, Iron Man and others, suspension & lifts OME, Iron Man, EFS, Fox, Tough Dog...
    What else?
PM RMackay, he runs a whatsapp group for FJ owners. He'll be able to give you more detailed information and invite you to the group, wealth of knowledge about accessories and bigger tyres and what not.
