Default I bit the bullet, panels etc to be delivered on Monday

For the past eight years we have the following standby system for our house, spaza shop and diesel depot.
    - 1x 6kW inverter
    - 4 banks of 48V (4x105Ah) batteries.

Lately I tested their performance during the night from 18h00
    - Up to about 09h00 the next morning we use +-11kWh and we switch over to mains with batteries at around 15% (as per the inverter panel)

On a normal 24h-day with mains we use +-44kWh average

I have now ordered the following
    SOLAR PANEL 320 WATT EXTRA ADVANCED A GRADE - T 1 16off for R34 165.12
    MPPT 80 Amp/hr Flexmax FM80 12/24/48/60V OutpT fan/heats com R9 291.00
    VAT Excluded

Installation on Tuesday and then the test.

We will still have Eskom as backup for "rainy days". Impossible to cut Eskom completely as we have factories running on the premises. Average monthly account of
    R16 000.00

    Great stuff.

To summarise for doffies like me:

    - 1x 6kW inverter @ ~R20k?
    - 4 banks of 48V (4x105Ah) batteries @ ~R10k?
    - 16 x SOLAR PANEL 320 WATT EXTRA ADVANCED A GRADE - T 1 @ R34,165.12
    - 1 x MPPT 80 Amp/hr Flexmax FM80 12/24/48/60V OutpT fan/heats com @ R9,291.00

    So around R80k including extras?

    And with VAT under R100k?

Our batteries are from Deltec at dealer rates +-R1700 ea x 16 off. It is a 48V system.

    Installation cost today @ R6500.

My calcs of capital recovered at 2.5y.

    Fingering Eskom... priceless!!

And I learned a lot about grid tie too.
Can cut the Eskom account by about 80% too. Waiting for quotes...

Right, so the summary is now:

    - 1x 6kW inverter @ ~R20k?
    - 4 banks of 48V (4x105Ah) batteries @ ~R30k
    - 16 x SOLAR PANEL 320 WATT EXTRA ADVANCED A GRADE - T 1 @ R34,165.12
    - 1 x MPPT 80 Amp/hr Flexmax FM80 12/24/48/60V OutpT fan/heats com @ R9,291.00
    Installation around R6500

Rough total = R115k incl VAT

Great stuff. That gives you a 6kW peak feed and you're running around 2kW per hour?

But I see your output is SLIGHTLY higher than the incoming from solar? How much of the day is in grid feed?

This unit not in grid feed. It was planned as a stand alone to run the house, shop, aquaponics and dieseldepot.

Depending on your requirements you may not need 4 banks. Our use during daytime is at +- 4kW with peaks to 5.5. Then the inverter starts moaning.
At night we do need all the battery capacity for at least 14h. May have to add another bank during winter when the sun rises later. Will see.

Our total use with factories included is 8500kWh (average) monthly. A grid tie will bring this down substantialy but no batteries required as there is no activity in the factories at night. If needed Eskom will not be cut, only reduced.

    Hi Johan,

I always find it interesting why somebody goes one way and another person the other way?

If it was me, I would have gone with a Hybrid inverter, that can do everything and more.
Why did you decide to go separate inverter and charge controller?

    Easy question, easy answer.

I have the inverter and battery system as backup since 2009

Only added the panels, etc. now

I agree on the hybrid inverter but if you have it and it is paid for and it works...

    Ok, got it.

Regarding adding a GTI to the mix.
Please make 100% sure the GTI and the Normal inverter can communicate with each other, otherwise there might be problems.
I have heard too many stories where this was not done correctly and the user had to endure extra pain and money to resolve it.
