    Default Prado, LC 76 or LR Defender 110?

    Hi all

    I am looking for an overlander. My current 1999 Pajero SWB V6, while an awesome little car, is just not big enough for us to comfortably tour in. At the moment it is just my wife and I, but kids are hopefully on the horizon in the next 2 to 3 years.

    I have been looking for LC 76s and LR 110s as a replacement, but there are hardly any on the market here. Those would suit me better, but I have started looking at a couple of other options as well, and found this:

    2010 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado D4D
    126 000km on the clock
    R340 000
    Owned by someone I know and in absolutely perfect condition
    https://www.namcars.net/Toyota-Prado-VX-1400683837

    The car will be used for longer trips off the beaten track. So far, we have done Damaraland/Twyfelfontein, Sossusvlei, Etosha, Erindi, etc. Looking to do Kaokoland, Southern Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, etc over the next few years as well.

    The way I see it, the pros and cons of the Prado for my purposes are as follows:

    Pros
    1) The 150L tank giving the car a range of over 1000km;
    2) Seems quite capable, although I am wary of all the plastic;
    3) Safe in event of an accident;
    4) Comfortable gravel cruiser; and
    5) Seems quite reliable;
    6) Resale value seems good (I don't sell my cars quickly and keep them for minimum 5 years and 120 000km - longer if they continue to meet our needs)

    Cons
    1) It's not a Land Rover Defender, which is what I actually want;
    2) It's not a LC 76 which would be my second choice;
    3) Very luxurious which seems like such a waste when roughing it like we do;
    4) Lots of plastic bits that can break doing things like Van Zyls pass, etc;
    5) Can't modify with things like gullwing doors, etc the way you can with the LR or LC76; and
    6) I'm not sure I trust the fancy suspension system (although I have not heard of failures).

    Any ideas on how to make this car work for us? The Land Rovers and LCs I have seen are often more expensive than this, so I know that this is not logical, but it just doesn't feel right to use such a fancy car for what we will use it for.

    What do you guys think?

    (I specifically did not post in the Toyota section so that I can get some sort of unbiased opinion)

    The Prado will be a good 3rd choice. Can't compare to the other 2, but as a 3rd option a good one. Will take you where you want to go, just need to be a little bit more careful. But it will managed Van Zyls very well, I think, with aid like crawl control. You can set it to crawl very very slow, you just steer.

    Don't get a Defender in Nam. Not enough spares or intelligent workshops.

    Buy a Toyota.

    Is that the one in Swakop for N$230k? Is that not expensive for a 2000 model?

    I am actually planning to go and look at it anyway but the range worries me, and obviously the price...

    I hear you.

    Read this before you buy a second hand Land Rover in Nam:

    Just think what a workshop like these can do to stuff up a Puma Defender with the hybrid Ford gearbox and spigot shaft if they can't work on a standard R380 manual box.

    I hear what you saying jelo, but one guy taking his disco to the wrong mechanic doesnt really prove a point.
    There are good landy mech's here, and parts are easy enough to come by, almost easier than toyota parts, and much cheaper, I kid you not.

    a forum member from sa had a breakdown here with his prado, wheel bearing, had to be ordered from SA.

    I needed leaf springs for one of our cruisers, had to come from SA.

    I needed a new diff lock switch for one of our cruisers, had to come from SA.

    I can go on and on.

    As to buying second hand, anything you buy second hand these days is a risk unfortunately, doesnt matter what brand.

    Yeah it is looking like I'll end up there unfortunately...

    Although Jeepman didn't use the indi in Swakop that is supposedly the LR expert - by all accounts things would have been different if his Disco had gone straight there

    True, and I'm a Defender lover myself. But down here we have a Landie workshop around every corner.

    And to be honest, does a Prado break as much as an old Landy?

    The Prado is by no means a 76, but it will take you much further than you (or others) might think.

    The only thing that might keep me away from such an old Prado is the piston issues and if it might have been chipped.

    I've got one, but it's a SWB

    Looking for something bigger and more overlanding-friendly

    If I get something in the N$250k to N$300k range I'll keep the Paj as well. I'm very attached to it and don't want to see it go.

    If my only options are more than N$300k it'll be on the market soon. 1999 model 3000 V6 24-valve (originally and SA car, not a grey import) with a genuine 92 000km on the clock

    Search dealer networks.

    I went through all this. Looking at Patrols and other options. Even if you have to wait a day or two no other manufacturer can beat the Toyota network.

    Very few can compare with a 76 Cruiser. I grew up with Landy`s and are a huge fan but please do not make decisions with the hart. Sit down and think with the grey stuff. Remote areas have zero support for most 4x4`s.

    Then buy a 76 V8 the best diesel engine available out there. Yes do not believe those naysayers about 500ppm diesel. With cats removed you can do 500ppm, talk to the Voetspore guys.

    Tenk = 130l, selfde as die 76 4.2 1Hz, wat jou dalk 7km/l gee as jy gelukkig is, dus 910km . V6 kry jy 6km as jy gelukkig is , dus 780km, maar jyt die hele bak om vol jerry kanne in te pak met die verskil in koopprys, en dit wat jy spaar op lopende koste

    Ek het sommer n 200l tenk daar laat insit. Sover wissel it tussen 5.2 km/l as ek karavaan tou, en 6.9km/l alles teen 120km/u . Met die SC sover kry ek sover 5.7km/l oor 30 000 km gelees wat Khaudum en Luiwa trips insluit met n kamper op, en plaas werk.
