Default Cant find Coopers for Patrol in Windhoek

Hey guys. Im looking for new tires. But I cant find 285/70/17 coopers in Windhoek. Any advice? Also I have been told that GY Wranglers (which would be my first choice) dont come in that size. Is this true?

    change to 285/75/16

if you plan on overlanding with funny size tyres you might get stuck somewhere with no replacements.

I Agree 16" is the way

Any distance North of Maputo or Musina you are looking for trouble with 17"

Seems like North of Springbok the same

275/65x17 is the standard size for the 4.8 Patrol. I fail to see the sense of replacing all five standard rims.

The 285/70 x 17 tyres will catch on the front when turning without lifting the Patrol. I raised my Patrol by 65mm and then I still had to cut the plastic brackets inside the rear sections of the front arches.

Than I found them just a little too big for towing up inclines with my 3.0Di Patrol without the EGT wanting to go off the clock. I managed to swap them for 265/70 x 17s.

Attached is a table staring from 255/65 x 17 (std for my Pathfinder) rising to the 285/70 x 17, just to compare sizes (inches and mm). Look here for possible alternatives. I would rather stay with the popular size tyres. I run the 265/70 x 17 on both my Pathfinder and on my Patrol. It is just more practical to let both run on the same tyre size.

I also will not change to 16s. First of all, to get 5 rims will be a problem, most tyre shops will only sell you 4 new mags, not 5. If you do manange to get 5, the minimum cost will be around R9k!!

I managed to get two new 265/70 x 17s tyres in Opuwo of all places! In 16s they had nothing bigger than 265/70 x 16s. But in Sesfontein I could only get 2nd hand tyres and they had about six 17's, only in 265/70 x 17s though. Granted, some places will have your size, others may not, but 17s are becoming more and more popular.

I've run 285/75/16 (33"), as well as 315/75/16 (35") on my Patrol and never had any hint of rubbing on any plastic, anywhere, ever. Although i do run a 2" lift in the front 3" in the rear.

As far as rubbing on control arms, .... adjust the steering limiters on each side of the front axle and that's all. No worries.

To my knowledge the 4.8 runs larger discs and callipers so i assume 16" wheels are not an option, hence the 285/70/17.

Unable to help in regard to sourcing tyres in Nam but i can speak from experience that the BFG KM2/KM3 are a phenomenal alternative option. I've run two sets o KM2's on my Patrol each yielding just over 100 000km. I've now replaced with Cooper STT Pro , and so far, enjoying them, but time will tell in regards to comparative strength and milage.

    Good Luck
