    Default Amarok oil temperature gauge

    Good morning All.

On the Discovery Media radio, there is an Off-Road app, which has 4 gauges. One of which is oil temperature.

Does anyone know whether this is supposed to work, or is it an optional extra that needs activation and thus payment, or is it only for some models with certain specs? Local VW dealer doesnít seem to know.

    Regards,
    Danie

    i have a 3.0 V6 and my friend has the 2.0 bitdi.

Both 2018 models and both highline +

on my bakkie i have the oil temp in the mfd between speedo and rev counter and as an option on the radio screen you are showing.

The 2.0 has the option to add it to the radio, but is also shows 0, so i think it is only a 3.0 V6 option

2.0 doesn't have the oil temp display in cluster, hence not in radio. Not put out via Engine Control Unit

    Hi Danie

Yip, just received my Amarok 2.0 BiTDI 4MO A/T Hi+ this week... And I have the same question. I'm busy with the dealership to find out from VWSA what the story is with the oil temp indication not working. Especially for an engine with not one, but two Turbo's. I would say it is very important to know what the oil is doing. And why would some models have this indication working and others not? If it's there, it must work... Correctly. Food for thought - this is a quote from my user manual, Offroad display section Pg 182: "Oil Temperature display: the needle is in the central area when the engine has reached operating temperature." So this tells me it must work the same way as on my Golf VII R that I traded in.

Will let you know the outcome...

    Cheers

Bakkie just got back from workshop (again) and there is no sensor in the sump and thus no joy in using the available tech. Highline thus not expensive enough for such toys

Will have a look on mine, i'm sure there was an oil temp in the measuring blocks. Sensor doesn't need to be in the sump...

Yip, Confirmed... VWSA said that because our SA Amarok 2.0 BiTDI is not fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), there is no Oil temp indication. And the reason why we have the Oil temp indicator on the Head unit, is because it is a generic unit used on all models. So, as you said, we did not pay enough to have this feature installed on our bakkies. I guess three quarters of Mil, is just not quite there

But I'm not going to loose any sleep over it anymore, time to enjoy it!!

Not quite on topic of the old thread but I was wondering.

My V6 has an oil temp display what is the acceptable range of the oil temp.

I am surprised by the disconnect between the water temp and the oil temp.

The water temperature goes to 90 nearly immediately.

The oil takes a long time to get to a range of 100 to 110.

People are often surprised by how long a car's oil take to reach operating temp.

I have logged different cars from time to time with an ELM327, and it takes a good 20 minutes for most to reach operating temp. That is why having the correct viscosity is so important.

Remember that waterís main purpose is cooling. The channels run through the whole block in dedicated cooling channels.
Oil is only meant to be really cooling the pistons so picks up heat a lot slower.
Also when your thermostat is closed thereís much less water volume to heat up, where as you have 7.5 litres of oil in one volume.

At what oil temperature do you get worried and when do you stop.

If the vehicle works hard I donít think itís a problem if it goes up to 120.

I think normal should be between 105 and 110.
    Not 100% sure on this.

Oil temps should never get out of hand if your cooling works right.

Most synthetic oils are OK up to 130, and even 140 for short periods of time. Around 105 to 110 should be normal.

Thank you, mine will work hard in a hot Lesotho this weekend and I would like to watch the oil temp as a matter of interest.
