Default What power unit is this?

On my recently acquired Jurgens Oryx 2002 model I don't seem to have the original Hercules power unit - except that I don't know what that looked like.

This is what is fitted to mine:

Anybody know what these are? And where I can find some info on it?

Can you post more pics of the first unit.

As for the second photo: that looks like a 80 - 90's power supply for mobile radio, something along these lines :

    but a 220V - 12V / 20A transformer-based one.

The first one I think is a DB box.

The second one is a 20A switch mode power supply, originally designed by Dupec, which was Manie du Preez's old company before he sold it to the Control Instruments Group. Manie of HCDP, he is a member of this forum, he is in Pretoria. These units were supplied to Jurgens Caravans for their early Explorer off road caravans.

    Hi Russell!
I took some more photos, hopefully clearer.
Unit 1. This unit seems to handle the 220Volt stuff

I would really like to get some info on these units, as I'm thinking on going the dc-dc charger route

Dave Miles is probably correct in it being a switch-mode - how much does the unit weigh? As for dc-dc charger I suppose one could power the charger from the 13.8V / 20A psu. As for the original purpose of that power supply in a trailer / caravan I can only speculate (ie. mobile radio), though more knowledgeable guys may come along with other uses.

Agreed, the first one looks like a local DB for when taking mains power from a campsite.

    Thanks Dave!
I'll trace the wires tomorrow to try and figure out what it does.

    Hi Deon,

If you going the DC to DC route, speak with Manie from HCDP, he is probably the biggest local manufacturer of trailer / caravan electronics in SA. He designed your power supply. He manufactures and supplies electric/electronic control panels to many of the trailer manufacturers. His products are all modular, so you don't have to buy the whole panel, you can buy what you need. And he stands by his products.

    Thanks Dave!
Couldn't wait and dug into the innards this afternoon. That power supply is supposed to charge the batteries, but it is not working. I put my smart charger on it for now, but that is only an 8 Amp, so don't if it will do the job.

I will google HCDP and see if Manie talk to me

As I see it, I need to charge the batteries when I have 220V available, but also from the vehicle while I'm driving. MAYBE in future a solar panel, but not on the cards now. Will be nice if I can find one unit that will handle all of that

    Thanks for you input!
