    Post Garmin inReach Explorer

Any views on the Garmin inReach Explorer? Specifically:

    1. Speed of sent and received SMSs?
    2. Does it work reliably in Southern Africa (incl SA, Namibia, Zim, Zam, Bots, Moz)?
    3. Has anyone had to summon emergency assistance using the SOS button and, if so, how was it?

The navigation and weather features are a nice to have but, bottom line, I want something reliable if I have an emergency somewhere very remote (eg Fish River Canyon, CKGR or Bots end of Khalaghadi)

    Hi,

I have one I used while ferrying airplanes. (Dont use it anymore as I dont mr ferry anymore).

From them all it worked really well. Live tracking for people at home also worked well.

SMS, from the device workes, but takes a few minutes to go trhough. But I never had a failed sms, or when someone wanted to send me an message.

I never had the need to use the SOS, but am sure it will also work as planned.

Also following with interest, was looking at this for the off the beaten track deep mountain country hunting trips, but as its only going to be used about 3 times a year I don't want something in the cupboard costing money every month.

    Hi Kraai,

Sure, they have a few options.

I will try uploading the screenshot with costs. I used the “Recrational” plqn that gave me more that enough coverage. This came to about R600/pm, you can cancel or change plans when ever you want. This includes tracking, SMS etc. There is also a cheaper plan for R250/pm if I remember.

This is one of those devices that works as advertised...
