Default Another Huey crash while fighting fire

I see another Huey has crashed while fighting fire, this time near Riversdal in the Southern Cape. Pilot fatality it seems.
    How many is it now?

This is very sad, our neck of the woods, well garden route. Wonder how something like that happens. We are having a massive heat wave, high winds, cant be easy at all for pilots, RIP.

If they are correctly maintained, their age is irrelevant.

This is more of a contributing factor, I think.
Heat, smoke and high winds make for really trying conditions.
Plus, the pilot was a respected flyer.
    Cheers,

So i do quite a bit of mountain hiking from this base, Newlands Forest.
Its the mountain fire fighting base.
Over the years the choppers when not in use are carefully stored here.
Now we hardly see the full quota, because of circumstances.
We desperately need new air firefighting equipment, especially choppers that can fill
buckets of water from the sea.
The courage that pilots and crew have to endeavor to get through the hell hole of tall flames and heavy winds is almost unimaginable.
Some times the copters come back scorched.
We have to look after these people and give them world class equipment.
The money is there, the BMW's, Audi's and luxury opulent unnecessary stuff can take a back seat for a while.

Why can't the machines in your picture fill from the sea?

This is some really skilled flying...

They don't use sea water because of the subsequent damage to the ecology - catch 22 situation.

Are these machines maintained with new parts, or with parts from a scrap heap somewhere where 50 plus year old choppers becomes scrap?I am asking since 50 years since manufacturing is a long time to still expect new parts for an ex- Vietnam war chopper to be maintained with new parts. Who else in the world still flies these museum pieces for emergency work?I can recall there was a maintenance issue putting a stop to a Huey flying passengers for flips from the Waterfront in Cape Town.

You can pretty much buy anything you want brand new for the machines and their components.
There is a system called PMA which allows parts to be made with all the necessary approvals in place to allow for Certification and subsequent Airworthiness.

As for operators...and the various derivatives/models
