    Default Another Snake id please

Was found outside Malmesbury. Unfortunately, the only photos available. The snake was killed by workers and was around 1,7m long

Mielie 84, what characteristics did you note to ID the snake as a cape cobra? Reason for asking cause on the photos it seems like it can be one of many snakes e.g Black spitting cobra (Looking at the snout and obvious color)

    Hi Epeniphrine,

Distribution (sort of on the limits for N. nigricincta woodi, although I must admit I know the Western Cape very poorly!) and the more dark-bronze colour, rather than black, made it more likely to be Cape cobra, also note the lighter coloured ventral side of the snakewhich is more in line with N. nivea.

I have also attached some posters from ASI which I was unable to do this morning on my phone

Makes sense, just never thought about it.
If I am not mistaken a Mozambique spitting cobra has a mixture of cyto and neuro?

I am comfortable handling them yes, although always very carefully with hooks/tongs, so would not call myself an expert at all.

I have been fascinated by snakes since I can remember, and growing up in the Lowveld I had plenty encounters with snakes and other creepy crawlies. Working as an ecologist for 11 years, and now farming back in the Lowveld, I still encounter lots of snakes, have already relocated 3 snakes this week out of the orchards to safer havens.

My wife does not like my fascination though, working on teaching her to love them

I did a course on snake handling, but I hope I never have to handle a puffy. Too fast, nasty bite, and their tail is too close to the sharp end. When I HAD to, I used two tongs to handle. Needed therapy afterwards
