Default Wanted - Bike Rebuild Project

    Good day to you all,
I am looking to take on an On-road/Off-road Bike restoration project and would appreciate any leads you might have in sourcing a good one – preference is for a 500cc or bigger (XR, XL, XT, TT, KLR, etc….), but would also consider down to a 200cc. Affordability is +/- R 5000-00.
My home base is in Durban.

    Any Info would be appreciated….

Sometimes Gumtree offers a few of these.
There was a XR500 in Cape Town recently that was partially stripped.. abandoned project
First question is.. do you require one to be road legal or not?

Hi hcs, idea is to have it as a roadworthy bike. Ultimate goal is to get into adventure riding, but will need to build up to the right bike slowly. I have looked on Gumtree, junkmail but not a lot in my price range.

Just be careful: the spares for the older thumpers are getting VERY scarce.

The XT/TT600 was only produced for around 6 years.
The XT500 single carb only about 4 years
    The XR500 as well.

I'd try and get something that had a VERY long production run.

Something like an old shagged DR650, XR650 or KLR650 that have both been mostly unchanged since the early 90s.

I agree with Jelo. Parts for the XT/TT range are becoming harder to find, unless you import from overseas from the likes of Ebay.

    I would love me a TT600 Tenere!

If the owner doesnt have papers, or the scrapped papers.. walk away.. You will end up with a nightmare getting it registered.
If you do find one that has papers, expect to pay more

Plente of spares for XR's at places like Startline etc. Also XR's Only and there is a dedicated XT site that sells spares as well. There is a guy in Joburg somewhere that spesialise in old Teneres, stripping for spares.
XR500 is a fun machine to rebuild or a XR600.
I just finished my own XR400 mini project.
XR650, KLR, DR you will pay a lot more to buy. And probably wont find a project bike either. Most are still running.

Even if it has been scrapped, check vin with SAPS, bought a scrapped Suzuki once and engine number was same as a Valiant stolen in early 70’s.
Was a huge task to sort out the issue, cops wanted to impound bike even though I explained that no ways could you fit a Valiant engine into a bike frame ( at least not a straight six.)

    Exactly.
Dont believe them if they say.. oh its easy, you just need to go for police clearance and off you go.. Its not that simple
No proper paperwork.. no sale. Unless you dont mind it being offroad

And you can also end up with another problem. If the bike was never registered on NATIS to be road licensed, you will have issues. Its not just a case of bolting on road kit

hcs, I agree, I have rebuilt a XR 200R and a XL 500 many years ago and enjoyed working on them.
Did not realise it would be a mission to re-register a bike with no papers though, thanks for the info....

SpiderGear- that's an awesome machine, the TT600 is high on my list of favorites.

Some sources call it the Z.

First launched in late 1983, quickly followed by the TT600H.

I bought my TT600 brand new in August 1984, trading in an XT550 and paying the balance in cash. (Thank you SADF danger pay).

I never could figure out why Yamaha insisted on drum brakes in front on the TT instead of a disk brake like the XT.

Its one of the reasons I bought the XR400 when it came up for sale, as it was licensed and had a RWC.

I can kick myself though, missed out on a stunning XT600 when I was looking. Should have bought it when I took it for a test.

I bought most of the parts needed for my XR at Startline, and some parts from Honda themselves

Yes.. long process and you run a risk.. they might make you back pay license fees. Happened to a guy I know that tried going that route.
