My 2016 Fortuner GD-6 is RUSTING - Is yours?

I am not a paint/metal expert so would appreciate some feedback from those more experienced than myself before I potentially escalate within Toyota. I may very well be in the wrong, that's why I am posting here first.

Vehicle - 2016 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 MT White

I noticed rust spots just above the front windscreen and also on the roof of the vehicle. After taking the vehicle to Toyota in Tokai, Cape Town, I was informed that the rust warranty would not cover the rust spots I was experiencing. Reason - They were emanating from areas where there were stone "Chips". I cannot refute this as I would not know what has caused each and every spot on the vehicle. The conclusion was however based on the fact that the bonnet had a few stone chips and it was then deduced that the marks on the roof were caused by the same "stones". I struggle to believe this for the two spots which are right in the center of the roof, above the rear seats. The stone chips on the bonnet are completely rust free...



Questions and general feedback I'd appreciate -

Do you believe Toyota has been fair in their conclusion not to assist at all under warranty?
Is it unreasonable of me to wonder how a 2 year old car can develop such aggressive rust, assuming there were stone chips?
Is your new shape Fortuner also experiencing rust spots?

I have rust spots in places where the GD6 Hilux has been hit by stones. Was going to enquire about this at the dealer next service.

My 2007 Hilux has plenty of stone chips as it has traveled many KM on gravel and not one of them has rusted like that .

We have a 2.4 GD 6 on hire at work with serious rust above the windscreen so I think there may be some quality issues Toyota need to look at on the paint side

Must be Toyota,s problem, I have a 10 year old Audi here at the coast with some heavy stone chips but not rusting like that, get the factory customer services on the job, that you would expect in the 1960-1970

Most VW products are zinc electro plated (similar to thin galvanising) and only really deep scratches will rust. Therefore the 7 to 12 corrosion warranty.

thats shocking on a 2year old car - raise a stink - start a support web site or facebook group for all aggrieved users

Toyota has had paint issues before on the bubble conquest rear hatch - look how many have peeling paint around the number plate area (had a baby blue one with this and the dealer advised it was a defect but couldnt guarantee colour match of repair) loads of them still around with that issue)

that rust is not on in todays world - the comparison with audi isnt fair as VWAG has been doing some great galvanising etc for years but for a market leader thats shocking and needs to be attended to asap

I agree with the comments above, it's far from normal , and should be taken up with them.
There are 20 yrs old cars that don't have have rust spot like that, even by the sea.

Something has gone wrong at the painting stage .

I have 3 cars, all 15+ years old, full of usual stone chips on bonnet etc.. No rust....

My dad's 2008 Hilux lives at the Nam coast (Henties) and is used for fishing at least once a week. No rust spots on the paint. the chassis and accompanying parts are showing rust yes, but nothing like that!!!

I can only hope that Toyota SA will come to the party here, the general consensus is that they should. Thank you for the feedback.

If it was a result of stone chips then surely the bonnet would have similar rust, but it seems more like Toyota is trying to dodge the issue. Unacceptible for a 2 year old car to have such bad rust!

Don't back down with that dealership and try the other dealerships in the Cape too.

BS!!! That is not a stone chip. If it was the impact spot only would rust - this is creeping in underneath the paint.

The primer is suspect there.

Maybe the Fortuner is not meant to be driven on roads where you can get chipped.

Two points: 1. its NOT from stone chips
2. its NOT an isolated case - I've got a colleague with the same problem.

Hard to argue if the original paint damage may have been from a stone chip or not, how would they or you ever be able to prove that either way?

But even if there was in fact a chip to bare metal that level of rust on a 2yr old vehicle points to primer issues or some kind of other metal prep issue, especially how far the rust has grown away from the main rust point. I wouldn't be surprised if the rust started from under the paint and was not as a result of a chip. Even if there was a chip to bare metal on the day the vehicle was purchased brand new, from my experience it takes longer than 2yrs for rust to develop to that degree, especially with would should be 2016 level of Toyota factory paint and primer technology.

One question though, does the op park the vehicle often near the sea, especially in direct contact with sea spray?
