Default Kgalagadi from South africa with one 4by4

Hi People with knowledge, admin if its not the right place please move?

Gf and I want to head out to Kgalagdi from sanparks 16 dec to 24 dec 2018. Camping with rtt on v6 4by4

    1. Can it be done with only us or do we need to include another 4by4 vehicle? (we are struggling to find people who are willing to brave the heat)

    2. IS this the wrong season? I mean I know its hot but we only have limited leave and opportunities and I will plan for the heat as best possible.

    3. What sites and how long? Can we cross into Botswana and stay there and continue home from there?

Hope someone with some self travel can give us some guidance and tips please?

As far as I know, all camps are fully booked for that period (I will be there then). In answer to your questions: (1)all routes on the RSA side of KTP is quite OK for a single vehicle. (2) Yes it is quite hot, but it is a dry heat (thus bearable). KTP is magic any time of the year. (3) If you have bookings for the Botswana side you may cross into Botswana.

All the SANPARK camp, Rooiputs, Polentswa should not be a problem travelling alone. Venture deeper into Botswana alone could be riskier, but doable. As long as you are self sufficient, think water and food, and responsible.

    1. Alone yes, just take some extra precautions.

    2. IS this the wrong season? Yes but everybody should experience it once in their lifetime.

    3. Most sites get booked up to a year in advance but enquire anyway.

    Enjoy!

Just go for it man, worst that can happen is that you end up camping outside the park and go in as a day visitor. Book now if you can though. With only 8 days to play with, between TR, Mata Mata and Nossob, your time will be gone. No need to go the Botswana route unless they have bookings and San parks not.

Agree go for it, you don't have to do the Botswana side, if you don't get into the park stay at kghalighadi Lodge, camp or chalet. They are 5 km from the gate you can be first in in the mornings and last out in the evening.

You will be fine by yourself, if you cross into the Botswana side make sure you are fully self sufficient, take enough water for drinking.

It gets very hot, but the Kgalagadi is special all year round. There is no wrong time of the year in my opinion.

Keep an eye on SANParks online reservations and make a booking as soon as you see an open space, Kgalagadi lodge is just outside the park as mentioned. Nossob is my favourite, Mata Mata is also nice.

We will also be in the park from the 23rd till 2 January.

    Enjoy!

As per most posts above, it's going to be very hot!

I've done Botswana side (various camps / routes ) twice with a single vehicle and not even close to having a problem. Again, ensure you're self sufficient, you've got your self recovery gear for in case and you should be fine.

Kgalagadi is so popular these days, both SA and Bots side, that you're not really going to be 'alone'... 8)

One of the reasons we enjoyed Swartpan so much. After leaving Kaa gate on Monday 24th we saw nobody (except the grader operators) till Friday 28th At Zutswa.

    Thanks for the great advice!

We got twee rivieren 18 dec, nosob 19 (glamping), twee rivieren 20 and 21 then we are heading back but would love a botswana one for 22 and 23. Will also check for other openings. Any suggestions?

I can do with half price fuel!

I see all the sites like bitterpan are heck expensive with no camping facilities?

What else do we need to know? Tips? Suggestions?

Try Two Rivers on Botswana side not as popular as Rooiputs etc I am sure you will come right at Two Rivers for 22 and 23. Better option than Twee Rivieren in my opinion.

Look at the Web for Botswana Parks and Wildlife Central booking in Gabs ..You need at least 11 months notice as there are only 6 sites at Rooiputs and 3 at Polentswa ..I Contacted them on May 1 this year for 18 days next April ..Could only get 10 nights at Rooiputs and thats aweful with the Petrol Price

Not wanting to burst your bubble, but you will not find space on the Botswana side of the KTP neither Mabua at this point in time, or at least extremely unlikely. I know of at least 3 forum members who has been trying for the past 2 months or so to find availability in Rooiputs, Polentswa or Two Rivers and could not. Space only becomes available again from middle January.

But contact DWNP in any case. Best to phone, you might pick up a night here and there in Mabua.

DWNP central reservations: Tel +267 318 0774, [email protected]

In my very humble opinion, though, the drive to Mabua for a night or 2 is just not worth it. Rather stay at Kgalagadi lodge outside the gate for those days or look for more availability in the park.

Edit: there are river front chalets open at Mata-Mata for the 22nd and 23rd. And Twee Riveren has campsites from 16th - 23rd. Check the online availability on Sanparks website daily.

Bear in mind that remaining payments for bookings for December is becoming due in the next 2 weeks or so. We have bookings for December in Kruger and I made a note on the calendar of when the balance is due. More bookings will pop up when people default on that balance payment.

So DWNP just got back to me to bookings for Entrance gate on the 22nd and Monamodi on the 23rd?

Its not what I asked for but I guess its all they have left?

    IS it worth it?

Can I make it in one day? How long is the drive?
