Default Petrol Addis jerry can wanted

    Hi Forumites,

I am looking for the Addis petrol jerrycans if anyone have some for sale. Preferably in the Gauteng region. If you have some please let me know. Planning for a trip and will need to carry some extra fuel for the trip.

    Many thanks in advance

Why not buy new? They are prone to leaking after a time.

I have just bought 2 from Takealot which was the cheapest price at R355 each. Next was Makro at R449 but it can be as high R689.

I gave a practically new one away last week. Biggest rubbish an overlander can buy. Mine leaked from day one. Even a new cap and seal did not solve the problem. The dangerous timebombs should be outlawed.

I watched one of the 4xOverland videos the other day. Andrew put a plastic jerry can in the bakkie, and that night smelt diesel fuel... the next morning his entire load bin was full of diesel. Vowed never to touch the plastic cans again.

Edit: And it was a brand-spanking new jerry can.

    Yes indeed!

Rather by a GOOD quality metal can, you'll pay more but if looked after it will last a lifetime.

It's just for a once off use hence looking for the used ones. The metal ones can do but that will mean that I keep them for long

    I use these, it's a container made out of 3mm HD-PE
I have never had one leak before, works really well for me.

If you were closer you could have as many as you wanted.

In any event, those guaranteed to leak Addis ones are only 15 litres, whereas the metal ones are 20 litres.

Metal Jerry cans are R400ish at Midas.

I have two Addis + Steel Jerries.

The trick with the Addis (I think mine are 25l) is to only fill them 3/4. Never had a problem.
If you have a petrol smell you have over filled...
Steel are of course safer which I usually use.

I can only repeat what has been said above - don't touch the Addis cans, especially not second hand ones. Only use steel, especially for petrol - even second hand steel cans are fine, you can buy new rubber seals for the lids at Outdoor Warehouse etc. With the steel cans, make sure you duct tape the lids after sealing them, even if they do have locking pins - the lids can work loose on rough tracks.
