It is not cheap. The engine sells for around US$6000.00 if you require a turnkey unit with all the required ECM's etc. Then you might also need something like a Aisin AX15 gearbox at US$1500.00 as well as bellhousing and tailpiece to mate to the transfer case in your vehicle.

The above excludes shipping and customs tax.

Of course you then need to fabricate engine/ gearbox mounts, sort cooling pipes, buy and install a correctly rated radiator etc.

But, I really think this would be one of the very few conversions that may in fact be trouble free. If you can stomach spending around R150k to do it properly.

Edit: Prices have gone up since I researched this topic about 2 years ago. Make that R200k+ for the conversion.

Expensive yes, but what are the options if you have a Defender for instance, in good condition, especially a TD5, with a buggered engine? To overhaul a TD5 to give decent mileage is probably gonna cost you close to R130000 anyway. Looking at what new(ish) proper 4x4's go for nowadays, I think it is a viable option if you want to keep your vehicle for a long time and be reliable.
