One thing I can say, having seen the New Defender, I believe it is worth the money (but I also race cars which is a bottomless pit of wasted money so im stupid like that), especially when you compare it to other vehicles in that price bracket. It will drive as nicely as the D5 as its pretty much the same suspension setup. It will go further off-road with less hassle than the old Defender will and possibly the D5 only because of departure angles.

If you are coming from a D3/D4, then defender would be a fantastic upgrade.

If you have a D5, I just don't think it's worth it to upgrade, unless you just want to change the looks, given the bizarre rear appearance of those D5's..

Bruce, you want it, buy it!
I dont think there will be any teething problems, the drivetrain, suspension, electronics etc are all well proofed and tested in other models like your D5

Spot on. The Defender isn't worse or better than a D5. It's just a different market.

What I like about the Defender is that it resembles just enough of the old Defender to not really be associated as an executive vehicle. It is luxurious without a doubt, but it doesn't represent the CEOs of the world. That's D5 and RR territory.

[QUOTE=BruceT;4348236]Because I am very bad at waiting for things I want

I must say that the discussion here, although I dont agree with everything being said, as well as whats happening in the world, is making me reassess my decision (thank you).........I have however done another final build and sent it in about an hour ago......(this can be done online with pricing now if anyone is interested). There is a possible buyer for my D5 already, so I guess the deciding factor will be based on delivery date.

My 3 girls and I are tie vote, 2 to 2. So maybe I should ask the forum..... What would you prefer to travel Southern Africa in? (without brand knocking, bringing in other brands, talking about old vs new etc) this is the choice. (i think i know the answer)[/QUOTE

Percentage wise, how much will be "Overland" and how much "Local" travels. Get a older Defender and kit it to the brim for dedicated overland work and use the D5 for local holidays and everyday use.

The recovery hooks only standard on the ďXĒ - also canít see them on the accessories. Hopefully it will be available later as a dealer fit option.

Funny enough I ride to work on a motorbike 95% of the time and my cars are used for holidays and weekend trips mostly........ and Im currently wearing some old takkies, jeans and a golf shirt at work, so I dont think I fit your mold.....

@tsotsi honestly about 80% of its life will be spent on trips (weekends and extended) of those trips i would say an average trip to Botswana for example is about 30% off of the tar. Namibia a bit more, maybe 50/60% off of the tar depending on route.

In the same boat - but with economy and virus problems - will probably not. But one can dream. Also donít know how the Defender production facilities may be affected by the virus problem - so final deliveries may be even later than the June/July expectation?

Haha Bruce - is it a FJ in JHB & a FJ in Plett ?

I really like the FJ but the dash and rest of inside just not me.

The new 90 will be my daily with the D4 V8 getting some rest.

The PEV (plug in Hybrid) will be 1st prize but they are not on the SA list yet ... I can charge at home and office.

Thus tempted to get the 90 with the P300 lowest spec at under R1m to test the new model and the 2l turbo petrol with the view to trade-up if all goes 100% to the PEV

Eish ... not easy choices but do feel lucky that I can make them
'91 BYB - Big Yellow Bus - Ex-CT Tdi Disco
    '05 BOV - Big Orange Van - TDV6 D3 G4 It met a COW and is Gone, gone , gone ... replaced
    '11 - D4 V8 - BLACK (for now )
'10 JK Sahara 2 Door - Open top for me and my boys - 3.8 V6 lifted muds bumpers sorted - Yip also orange

I thought so too at first but really enjoy the ruggedness, simplicity and the tough feel.

flip i wish that was true. If it were I wouldn't be questioning the purchase at this time.

Jelo Im impressed you seem to have matured.
PS. I also agree with George about the D5 vs Defender comparison.
