Yes, it has character, but so do some of the worst cars ever built...

For me, in terms of ownership, I want the joy of the drive. I want to klap it along Long Tom pass, and enjoy the sweeping corners, with enough power to overtake GTI's safely , and then getting to destination, I want to offroad like a Land Cruiser. I want ability, and reliability. I want a plush interior with modern infotainment, and comfortable enough to use daily on a short commute. I guess I want the vehicle with THE best "on road - off road ratio"

So to that end, there are some boxes yet to be confirmed ticked, but honestly, can you see any vehicle capable of doing the above any better?

    Because I can't...

Any of the other Land Rovers available on the market today... there are six models to choose from, take your pick depending on space requirements.

...or MB GLE, GLC, Volvo XC90, Touareg and more .... have a look in the back of the CAR magazine... you are spoilt for choice.

A RR is probably the closest in terms of off road - on road, ratio. Because what it loses out on off road ability, it makes up on the road.... almost....( Because it's just not going to offroad like a cruiser....

However, would you do van Zyls or a couple of other bucket list grade 4 (5?) type trails in a RR?

    Really?

Could someone point me in the direction of the Land Cruiser vs Range Rover debate before we derail this thread please

"800km done and dusted in Namibia in Land Roverís new Defender. Land Rover didnít hold back on the difficulty of the terrain either - there were some gnarly 4x4 tracks along the way. No worries for the Defender"

    from Leisure Wheels magazine

"Defender adventure in Namibia, done and dusted. We piloted the new Land Rover Defender for 800km through Namibia's tough as nails Kaokoland. This was no la-de-da gravel road drive - we traversed some really tough 4x4 terrain. Full adventure and a comprehensive Defender 4x4 driving report in the upcoming May issue"

You do not just free them from sand with a normal 4x4 not even two. You need big equipment like front end loaders.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

Touareg has 295mm, didn't check the others, but they'll all be high enough as a touring vehicle, I'm sure.

The New Defender has found itself in an established market and it's playing catch-up.
