R800k falls far below the "very well off" bracket.
That class are looking at range rover category.

I thought the Defender would be a "peoples car"
    Really?

I thought the Defender would be a "peoples car" and ultimately save the LRJ brand from bankruptcy.
It was never going to be that.

The word I got from a JLR friend is that it will start of price wise where the D4 left

New Wrangler JL starts @ R860k..........so R800k is probably spot on for a proper 4x4.

I said this before: there is a gap between the Evoque and the D5, and this vehicle will plug that gap price-wise.

    Really?
You saying that R800k is within reach of the average Joe? The installments on an R800k car with 10% deposit and 10.5% interest over 60 months with no residual are R15 500 per month. Dont know about you, but that is way beyond what I can afford. makes me one of the poor okes on here i suppose.

Once the hype is over they will be back to selling "defender numbers" per year if its priced at those levels.

The New Defender is being punted at the same level as the Prado. This is NOT a vehicle for the Average Joe, JLR has indicated that the premium markets are their target.

I like what we see. The price will be too high for me unfortunately for a new one.

The question is how will it hold its value.

If like the new Jimny they its worth it new.

It will sell and it can see a waiting list and the usual second hand dealers offering immediate delivery at a 30 % plus premium.

In that case I wonder why they made such a hype of the design and kept it a secret. Not much we haven't seen yet on the "disguised" prototypes.

JLR's future lies heavily on the success of the Defender from two perspectives - the physical quality of the vehicle and secondly the price it hits the market at. Despite arguably being more capable, it will contend in the Fortuner / Everest / family SUV buying market and a current void in the JLR stable with the D5 and Range Rovers being in the luxury buying market. These other SUVs range around R700k - R750k, so I would expect a bottom range of R750k - R800k going up to probably R1.2m. If the bottom of the range is R900k, JLR better start stressing about their future.

But the old defender was then not an average joes car either!

Impossible to contend fully in the fortuner/everest market.

That market starts from 420k for a full 7-seater (4x2) which most moms using these as family roundabouts dont care as they never hit the rough stuff in their lives.

Very unlikely defender entry price can be there, so it can never compete in that category.

You can pick up an entry level 4x4 Fortuner for R 530 800 and there are 4x4 SUVs on the market, all be they entry level, for R 330k...
