    Default Peugeot RCZ

    Hi guys,

Hope this is in the right place...

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm looking at buying a 2011 Peugeot RCZ 1.6T for SWAMBO.

Does anybody have any experience with one of these? How reliable are they? How expensive to maintain? Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Can't comment on that model, but here are some tips in buying a French car:

    - Never pay retail value: always pay less. I'd say a fair price is get the midpoint between trade and retail and then chop a couple of ZAR off that.
    - You can't easily sell a used French car back to the trade, even back to the authorised dealer, you usually can only sell privately.
    - Most spares are imported and that means long waiting times and Euro prices.

Both of my sons have French cars, so I have some experience. A Renault and a Peugeot.

All I can say is that to me is a brilliant little car. The engine is a gem and has been used in a variety of cars with different power outputs.
As Jelo said its French car and spares might be an issue as well as built quality of the car.

Another bit of advice: if in ANY doubt, replace the cam belt immediately.

The styling writes cheques that the chassis can't quite cash (it's not that fast nor handles all that well) but if you keep your finger on it, it's a fun toy for not much money.

Be aware French cars from this era can be fragile in silly ways. The days of the Peugeot 405 is long gone...

Condition, service history and price, in that order. Don't pay too much.

Not specific to the RCZ but rather to Peugeot ownership in general. For my sins I have owned 3 Peugeot's 2 x 307's and 1 x 407. Great cars until they break and then you will cry as almost all parts are dealers only and usualy ex France.

If you buy second hand with enough depreciation already factored in then they can make sense, but when you do the sums assume you will not be able to get anything beyond scrap value for them when you do sell.

My buddy has a 508 with 130 000km on it. So far it has has the high pressure pump replaced twice. Various other bits and bobs that needed repair or replacing. Cam belt snapped/replaced a year or so ago and last week it dropped a piston (R30k to fix that by specialist, agents would be considerably more!). He doesn't abuse his vehicle and it is served on time. Previously he had a Peugeot as well that he virtually gave away.

I've also had a Peugeot in the past and vowed never again!

STAY AWAY FROM THEM!! French cars suck! IMHO...

Also had a couple of 307s, find a good independant and do preventative maintainance, belts especially. That said, I follow the advise of my mechanic and only buy the 1.6 NA motors, not the 2.0 and especially not the 1.6 turbo motors. Take a walk around a peugoet mechanic's and see all the open turbo engines waiting for parts.

Rather spend the money on cocaine and hookers, much better return on investment

    Amazing how experiences differ.

My 2010 Citroen C5 is on 135 000km now, at the cost of 2 rear shocks.(PEUGEOT 508 same drive train)

Car is solid, no rattles, averages 6.5l/100km (2.0 HDI Diesel) and is quieter inside than my ex Merc E-Class.

When we started our business in 2012, I wanted something that was comfortable, economical and quiet, as I did lots of kilo's.

In the back of my mind, I had " use it for 2 years and throw away.", now, I reckon I might start looking for something else at about 200-220 K km.

One of the best buys I have ever made.

I bought a new Peugeot Bipper for work earlier this year. Two weeks ago they call me one morning, Bipper won't start. Call dealership and they take it away on roll back. 6000km on the clock. Verdict? Fuel pump has packed up! Had to be replaced as a whole. I guess is the high pressure pump. Not very happy!

It might be one of the best vehicle I have ever driver, balance between power and fuel economy is awesome.... Boot is huge... but the rear seats so small and impossible to get in and out.
    BUT
If something go wrong.... or rather say when something goes wrong... Go and google Hello Peter... loads of complains as well as those 1.6 motors are know for timming chain issues, there is no guide holding the sprockets on the cams.
Think there are better vehicles out there

We bought 307 Auto, years ago for my wife.
With 37000km it had endless problems with the gearbox.
Twice we had box flushed and some sensors replaced but to no cure.
By the way in service book gearbox was already replaced at 24000km.
Finally at around 70000 km it was written off.
My Mother bought 308 petrol demo, with that was not much wrong, but she didn't keep it for long, so I can not comment.
