Default Need some advice RC Buggy 1/10

    Hello Guys,

I had a Tamiya 1/10 buggy many years ago. I have always wanted to get myself another 1/10 RC buggy. I am so out of the loop that I don't even know where to start. I have narrowed it down to the following:

    • 1/10 scale
    • 2WD
    • Not interested in moster trucks, but more something like this - TORMENT 2WD

where to buy from and spares available/ after sales service?

    What make?

    Brush or brushless for beginner

What type of battery? I remember my old Tamiya used to last 12min. I am sure with new batt technology this has improved

I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I used fire fly (www.fireflyhobbies.co.za) in the past. Online and walk in by his shop in Meyerton. You are spoiled with choices on 2wd buggies. I will stick to the bigger names e.g. Tamiya; just for spares availability, although when it comes to buggies I believe Mugen is the best (My opinion and I stick with it).My advise will be to decide what you want to do, just play around, race (now or in future), realistic looks, etc. and then decide what you should get.I get about 15-20 min of crawling on one battery (5000) with my twin motor, and about the same messing around with my wife`s CC01. She how ever get about an half hour "crawling" with the cc01.I will not easily buy secondhand, unless it is a real cheap that it is still a bargain after replacing some parts.Regarding brushless; you will find many online discussions do you reading and if you think you will ever want a brushless then get one and just "de-tune" it till you feel comfy bringing the performance up.

I'm just looking at getting a decent 1/10 truck (something like the torment 2wd) for messing around. I am definitely not planning on doing any races now or in the future. Not looking at any crawling trucks nor have to look realistic. Just need advice on makes, spares availability and what entry level trucks you guys recommend.

Not many brands can offer the bang for bug as Tamiya, to mess around why not go for something classic like the madbull, blitzer beetle or hornet. Parts for these are easy to get, that is if you ever will need any. these cars are old school tough. Have fun making your decision.

Havent been in the game in ages, but

4wd is easier to drive, we used to drift them
2nd hand market is alot better. Get into the racing scene, those guys sell 2nd hands for dirt cheap

Batteries, I used lipo's. its alot more expensive. but its worth it
Brushed motors, but brushless as soon as you stop crashing

Someone mentioned the shop near tygervalley. Use them. really awesome bunch

Popped in at speed models. They have a HSP 1/10 monster truck with lipo battery and brushless motor. They stock spares. Can anyone recommend the HSP brand? Price R2750. Why is it so cheap? Am i missing something? On paper it looks like an amazing deal.

I personally would not go with the hsp make, as they do break more easily due to inferior quality of plastics. Sure, spares are available, but for how long is anyoneís guess, as these Chinese manufacturers do tend to outdate their models frequently. My first rc was a Traxxas slash 2wd. It will cost you about R4.8k, fully rtr on bidorbuy. It may be a bit above your price range, but these will last a lifetime, often without breaking. After 6 years of launching mine off rooftops and over fences, I fitted it with a new proline Ford F-150 body and semi-retired it (the attached pic may be upside down - sorry)

I would otherwise stick to your original idea of an ecx torment - if memory serves that is the 2wd short course truck. I recommended the 4wd ecx ruckus for my nephew a while back - and the thing hasnít broken yet. And heís 6 years old.

Thanks for the advice. Yes I'm going with the ECX Torment 2wd. It has a 15T brushed motor with LiPo battery. If I want to, I will upgrade at a later stage to a Brushless system and metal gear-set. There are only good reviews about the Torment 2wd so I'm sure I can't go wrong there.

Nice to see some life in this category!!

You can also look at the Traxxas Slash 2WD or 4WD.
Fantastic trucks, google them and check a few reviews.

Locally available and spares are dead easy to get hold of.

Ok, bought the ECX Torment 2WD from http://www.jk-products.co.za/ in Strand (Western Cape). I went to the warehouse to go buy the car and not online. They have a massive warehouse full of RC - everything . also inquired about the ECX spare parts, and there are plenty. The car is amazing and handles well. I am so glad I did not go with a monster type truck as they tend to wheelie a lot and can be difficult to control (for a novice). This is a picture of the exact truck I got.

I actually did research the Traxxas, but was a bit too expensive. Here is a interesting article I read on 2WD Short course Trucks.

Next up is to buy a bigger capacity LiPo Battery.

They are a bit pricier than the other brands, thats for sure.
I'm just around the corner from B&B so it's easy to get to parts, which makes a difference.

    Enjoy the truck!!
