Ek dink jy het nou genoeg gewys hoe jy die Trail bou. As jy ons nou 'n klomp geld vra om die trail te ry gaan dit net al hoe moeiliker raak om te sÍ jy vra te veel

Hierdie trail is op by bucket list. Nog net hoe waar en wanneer. My jaar is nogal vol beplan wat 4x4 aktiwiteite aan betref.

I have been a bit busy the past week, and the one time that I did manage to get out to the trail I wanted to clear out the top of the pass. The reason I decided on this particular route down from the mountain is because of this natural gulley that runs down most of the way.

I only have to clear away a few rocks and managed about 50m in about 30 minutes with a bit of help.

About halfway down there is a couple of narrows, but clearing this out is quick. and will leave a few interesting obstacles.
The gulley runs for about 150m and would have cleared easily earlier, but i had to make sure I could actually make it down the bad stretch before I did the easy bit.

I absolutely LOVE the fact that you go up and down your trail like a Klipspringer with a 20+ year old designed NP300 trying to make it rideable for current state of the art 4x4's

Secretly I enjoy the fact, but I try not to emphasize it when others do the trail as it seem to dampen their spirits and like them to remember the trip as them conquering the trail.

I am looking forward to Saterday , I have some scouts coming to check out the trails for an event that they will be holding in a couple of months in which a large number of vehicles will paticipate. I will take some pictures over the weekend.

Not much time available, so I dashed in tonight to clear another easy bit at the top of the pass.

and then an easy stretch with just a couple of loose rocks to chuck aside.
I have about 15m to go to the top of the pass, I hope to have some time to get it there on Sunday.

I had 2 vehicles on the trail today, an older and a newer Hilux. There is just no comparison between the 2 , the newer D4D was dificult to thread through, the low slung nudge bar did a lot of nudging. The older raider just skipped through like it was nothing. the older pickups were just beter.

Edging past "Gert se klip". it is not just narrow, but a steep descent with not much chance to go back up if your line isnt right. to make it worse the right wheel drops down at the end making the vehicle lean into the rock.

The shelf at the start of the B route is surprisingly dificult for the new vehicles while for the older ones it is a a straight drive down.

Route C is almost ready, that should make the trip worthwhile.

There was a lot of large boulders to roll out of the way.
The slope is really steep and the machine will tip over backwards if I try to go up forwards, so I reverse up and rake the rocks down bit by bit. There is the danger of a big one rolling down into the machine, so I would first pul down a bunch of smaller ones and make a wall for the bigger ones to stop against.

Unfortunately I was concentrating too much while working to take pictures. In this picture you can make out the top of the pass in top centre of the picture.
The path goes up the middle first, then to the right behind the tree, the it goes up a bit, and cross all the way to the left.

I took the machine up as far as it would go, the rest I need to do by hand.

True, it does make the job much easier, the problem is that the digger is very top heavy and could only get halfway up going forward before there was no weight on the front wheels to steer with, and I had to position the back hoe so it would press on the ground if the front started to lift.
Reversing got me up a lot further and that is how I worked. The total that the machine managed to do was 23 m on a 2.1km piece of track, barely over 1%.

The machine could do all of it, but that would mean making slopes that the machine can manage which would be a normal road.

I took Klipspringer (he has been called that by too many now to think of another name) up to where I got with the machine to give some perspective.

And though it was starting to get risky with the top heavy machine it is not much for a 4x4.

Lots of rocks had to be moved carefully to clear this out. What made this area particularly dificult to do by hand was because it was loose boulders sitting on sand, there was no convenient support points for levers to push against.

There are less boulders as you go further up, so that can be done by hand again.

Only a small unpassable section still remains, the path goes down to the right, and then crosses over completely to the left before going down to where the Hardbody is peeking through the bushes.

While I was up there I took a picture of the top part of the pass. The path runs up that gully to the left of centre in the pic.

Exactly 1 hour and about 4m of progress. I think the remaining bit is under 20m now.
The first drive through is sure going to be sweet , I can almost taste it already.

I left the site yesterday thinking about thegap between these rocks. I measured it and the Hardbody will get through it easy enough, but someone will scratch their newer wider vehicle eventualy. I was of 2 minds on whether to move the boulders on hte left slightly vs breaking down the one on the right that the crowbar is leaning against.
I am leaning towards breaking up the one on the right as it will give me material to make a bit of a hump there that will help keep running water off the path.

In case anyone was thinking I am making it too easy, I can tell you that I wished I had a crawler gear going up to where I had the trail finished to. The hardbody was struggling in 1st gear low range.
As there was no space to turn I had to reverse down and because it is so steep and your wheels are slipping at times you end up in a line that will not work, so you have to go up again and choose a line down that will cause you to slip into the correct line.
I took the hardbody up there to see if I am making the path wide enough, and it was a good thing, as it is not.

The rock looks all cracked up and porous on the outside, but as you go deeper it is just solid.
I managed to knock a bunch of pieces off it before I started overheating and had to leave it.
