It is difficult to get a picture to show what an obstacle is really like.

To get through this are you have to go up the slope the black dog is on, turn left to get up, cross a dip behind the bulge, go right, then sharp left to get up onto the ridge on the right behind Pedro, drive to the right on top of the ridge then take a sharp left to get down the steep other side.

The ridge line where the shaddow starts is where you will be coming down.

Anyway, it is a lot of fun, and because it is not a marked trail you get the line a bit different every time.

A rake custom made for the job, weighs about 15 kg, but works.

If we had known about this a few weeks back when we passed by maybe we could have tested the capabilities of the old Suuz !!!
It MAY just have put the (New) Toyota to shame.
Just joking - but wish we had been able to have a look while we were there.

I was a bit wary to advertise it in the beginning as I wanted some feedback from other drivers before allowing too many to vehicles in as I cannot offer recovery service due to complicated liability isues with the company as this is basicaly a hobby for us. I wanted to get the word out through a medium like the forum to get more experienced drivers drivers in first who can maybe share their views on it.
At the moment we are not charging any fees and anyone who wants to do the trail please contact me and I will do it with you if possible.

While on the subject, I have a KML , a KMZ and a GPX file of the first part of the route, my idea was to bluetooth , mail or send this as it is possible to get a bit lost on the route, would that be of any use to import into a GPS device for example? I did mark all the junctions with a steel peg with a yellow arrow, but while admiring the scenery it is easy to miss them.

It will help. However, I would suggest that you also do a decent map and include some coordinates on the map for handing out to the guys who want to do the route at the spur of the moment when in the area. It can also happen that some Tracks4Africa contributors visit the place and send the data for inclusion on future maps.

    Agreed.
We did that for T4a in Gonarezhou when they opened up the central route from south to north or vica versa - before that you needed to leave the park to move from one section to the other.
It will also help you with publicizing your track.

    Thanks.
Pedro helped me to clear away the rocks that prevented entry to the river bed.

This is the first time a vehicle ascended this bank, and the angles are always more steep than they appear to be when on foot.

We took some time to evaluate the obstacles, the idea is to prevent damage to vehicles but still keeping the challenge.

There are some really steep climbs on this part and quite a few even steeper options to develop as obstacles that can be bypassed if you don't want to do them.

May I ask, do you work/live/grew up on Klein Pella?

I did a quick drive through the new trail in the opposite direction to see what it is like. I had a colleague visiting so took him along.

It is whole new experience to drive it in the opposite direction, every turn and obstacle needs to be handled differently.

It did feel like climbing up was a bit easier than down because you can see the ground in front of you better.

    Yes it is open.
We are calling it a Grade 4 to discourage softroaders for now though it may well be a grade 3 in the downwards direction. I have also opened the new shorter section that I believe to be a grade 4.
There is currently no charge to drive the trail, though we do require anyone who wants to do it to complete and indemnity form, compay rules.

Contact me if you want to do it, I have put up some signs to indicate the route, but more may be needed.

Please add an extreme section. A section for modified 4x4`s only. something that is a real challenge to do. 2km in 5 hours or something close to it. We need a NC Carnage Canyon

Will definitely test your track when I am in the area. Keep up the good work.

My problem with adding an extreme section is the fact that I cannot test it with my vehicles, so I will not be able to tell if it is at all possible to do it even with modified vehicles.

I have the perfect litle canyon, 1.5km extension of the existing route, the problem is it is not possible to make escape routes on it, if you cannot get through you have to go back.

I started today with a new bit of the trail, it is on the section where I first made the escape route to get access. Now I want to make the direct route over the hill.

Up there it will be more interesting, it gets really steep and loose close to the top.
Some people say leave it just like that for the hardcore guys, but I believe the purpose of a road is to take you somewhere, not prevent you from getting through, and I believe the view from up there is worth the effort to get there.
Going down the other side is takes you into the orange river valley.

I will add an alternative drop into the valley for those who want the extreme soon enough.

From here on it will be a bit more work. The Rocky bit is not too bad, but the last bit to the top will be hard to climb even with the bike.
