I thought it would be a reasonably quick outing, but we landed up spending hours at the top while the kids played.
Very nice and peaceful in the winter sun, and fun to see what vehicles come up and over - saw a beaut of a swb series landy that came over.

We (when I say we, I mean someone else ) should organize a forum GTG up there

There is an abandoned mansion on the mountain and a waterfall. Will go show it to you on the next outing.

Sunny Sunday morning, went to the hardware store and took a little detour.

First time I tried the Cruiser off road.
Mud turned out to be deep and slimy bog on the one side, and I slid sideways into the reeds.
Manual hubs which I locked, but got proper stuck - I don't think they engaged?

Myself and a passerby (David) spent an hour digging and laying rocks and sand under the wheels. Luckily the mrs interrupted her shopping to come save me with the Rangie. Took less than a minute and a nice slow pull with a strap.

Subsequently stuck in 4H, which sorted itself out after sitting for a few hours.

Any tips on these old timers?

I had a FJ60 for 16 years. Great Cruisers. But standard, they don't have any diff locks. When you loose traction, one front wheel and one rear wheel will spin. I would guess that your front wheel hubs do lock. They are pretty reliable.
As to being stuck in 4H for a few hours: had the same once, don't know why. But it sorted itself out, like in your case.

I have been pulling out cars and bakkies for about a month now on this road. Total drowning of a Yaris, and last night this Spark. There are some pools that virtually cover my 33s. Thats around 750mm deep.
My 4x4 has been on standby for a pregnant lady to get to the closest hospital just over 60km away. Its nearly a half hour drive to just get to the tar road. She has had some complications, and yesterday afternoon was the third trip we took her out to the hospital. Her water broke as we drove into the hospital parking.
Out of fifteen families, we probably have six cars that can make it out on this road, two of which don't have the drivers with the ability to want to even try it.
The Sani has been running this road nearly every day for a month now. A day of that was two trips with nearly 2 ton of sewage tank trailer to the sewage farm.
The potholes in these pools are however a big problem, and this week I think I have blown up my front shocks. Last two days I have to crawl through the holes in fear of bottoming out the front end.

Sani gets washed every time we come off the road to try and keep the mud under control. Miss a wash or two and the sidesteps "grow" to catch the bottom of the doors when you open them.

Why sewagefarm?
