Default Discovery 4 Long Range Tank

    Good day everyone.

Just a quick question. I have a Frontrunner Long Range Tank fitted to my D4 V8. The Frontrunner website said that there is no way of telling how much fuel is in the tank. This past weekend we drove to Pta and filled the car with a 103 liters. I did ask the person filling the tank to give it a minute or two as the filler pipe feeds both tanks. After he said nothing more wants to go in I assumed both tanks were full. We drove until the main tank was just under three quarters and I started pumping from the auxiliary tank and it filled the main tank. After a couple of days in Pta we hit the road again and wanted to pump more petrol from the auxiliary tank as we only pumped about a quarter tank from the 2nd tank, thus there still should be plenty left. I could hear the pump coming on, but after a couple of minutes I noticed that the fuel in the main tank is not increasing. I stopped the pump as I don't want it to get burnet out. Went to the filling station and only managed to fill 93 liters before it could not take anymore.

Any suggestions? I can't hear a difference in the pump in terms of noise. So now I'm not sure if the pump is faulty or the tank is empty.

Also, how long does it take to fill the 2nd tank? Maybe it wasn't filled up properly.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Andre

That will make sense then. Perhaps the 2nd tank did not fill, as didn't spend more that 10min at the pump.

You have a huge airlock. I had the same with mu 90 till I fitted a second breather from the 2nd tank that vented into the filler pipe. T-d it into the main breather pipe.

So you have to spend 30 minutes at filling station??
Surely design or installation of the long range tank must be defective?

    Air lock or breather problem?

Fitting a LR tank to a V8 has some unique challenges due to the fact that it actually breathes through the carbon canister once the filler cap is closed. There is a lot more plumbing below the V8 compared to the Diesels. IIRC even the Kameel developed in conjunction with Landyworx had some issues on the V8, last I recall, I might have heard incorrectly, they don't fit them to V8s anymore.

Mine is a copy of the original FR tanks that had a raised bit where the breather connects. I got it from Bob in Alberton as he had it made years ago according to the original FR drawings (I did not ask how he got hold of them), later on FR went for a design that's simpler to manufacture.

It took me a few weeks to sort out all the niggles. It is very easy to get a breather just wrong enough to create airlock, especially as all the other plumbing limits space for routing. Initially I struggled to fill the tanks. Keeping in mind that no matter what I did through the years, filling the V8 takes a bit of time and I hated stopping to fill up.

I ended up creating a dual filler point, to have peace of mind on exactly how much goes into which tank, increasing breather diameter and added a fuel gauge, although this is not really accurate. This then created the situation where the larger tank would pressurise when full, the filler caps have a one-way valve to let air in, not out. In my case these two factor combined and started siphoning fuel out of the 2nd tank, right up to the top of the main filler cap, once there it either went into the Carbon Canister as liquid not vapour, then out the Canisters's breather, leaking fuel under the vehicle or out when I opened the main cap to check. Meantime the car would splutter as it now dumped raw fuel via the Canister recirculation line to the inlet manifold.

Needless to say, it scared the crap out of me the first time this happened. Turns out after reading US forums its a fairly common issue there.

This got solved by plumbing into the carbon filter line as the US guys do, or they add a separate breather outlet for the 2nd tank, I could not find one locally and was in a bit of a hurry.

The FR copy actually takes 102 L to the neck but on hot days it generates enough vapour to overwhelm the Carbon Canister if you fill it and park. Fine when travelling, otherwise I add about 90L. The main tank still takes about 10 minutes to fill from empty, the 2nd about 5 mins.

I transfer for about 15 mins when the light goes on and then I have about another 15 mins left for later. You can hear the pump running dry if you pay attention.

Who will be able to put in an extra breather? Is it an easy job for an indie or do I take it to Frontrunner.

The main tank may not be filling, take the tool (long yellow thing) you should have been given with the car and unblock the safety mechanism on main tank (prevent petrol being poured in a diesel tank). I had the same issue and this got it feeding into the right tank.

I had an issue with my Disco when I got it. The aux tank never took more than 40 liters. I just assumed it was small. Tgwinduna had a look and said there was no problem, he checked fuel lines and all that and sent me on my merry way. Whatever he did gave me a heart attack the next time I filled up though because the Landy took 172 liters on board. Not sure who was sweating more, the attendant or myself. Haha. So yes, I would check for airlocks and all that.

Just wanted to make a plug for Overlandworx - just picked up my 2012 D4 with their long range tank. 120 extra liters. Very well done including a wheel carrier.

That is a nice wheel carrier. Is the stock bumper cut open and the carrier installed "thru" the bumper?
