Default changing from 15" to 16"?

On my 1983 FJ60 Cruiser I got a set of 31/10.5 R15 tyres. They are getting old now and I want to replace them. Having looked at tyre availability & prices I was starting to wonder: would it make sense to change rims and tyre size to 265/70 R16? It would seem like that has become a rather popular size in the past couple of years and prices are sometimes below, sometimes above those of the 31/10.5 R15. On average the prices seem to be fairly similar.

My main concern is not necessarily price, but choice & availability. Any comments?

My understanding is that you can deflate a bit more with 15" and it is therefore preferable.

Unless you are into extreme stuff and can really tell the difference, the difference between 15 and 16 from a deflate and flotation point of view is of academic interest.

15 went out of fashion years ago, and probably the best choice and availability for an off-road vehicle will be found in 16.

But it all depends what your application is.

Since I got the FJ, the 60 Series is used more on gravel roads, not real difficult offroad stuff. I would think it wouldn't have enough power to do great in the dunes anyway.

I was just surprised how the market has changed in the past 9 or 10 years, that's how long I haven't been shopping for 15" tyres.

As mentioned, 16" tyres are now cheaper than 15" due to volumes. Rims are also very easy to find for the LC PCD.

Depends what you looking for, can still find 31x10.5/15 for good prices. If you really want to go with current trend then now you would have to fit 17" as that is what almost all the bakkies etc come out with now, often tyres are better priced than the 16".

Also if you are going 16", then rather 265/75/16, cheaper and easier to find.

The 2F in the FJ60 is not really overpowered, so I was thinking staying with the current diameter would help to not sap any more power of it.

245/75-16 are quite cheap. 30.5 inches diameter.

I have also been contemplating this as I also have 31 10.5 R15 on the hilux, what are the other pros and cons? Consumption? Speedo out? Engine ware?

The thing about moving from the 31/10.5 R15 to 265/70 R16 is that the tyre circumference is pretty much the same. Therefore it doesn't affect any of those points. The tyre width is pretty much the same, too. While a 245/75 R16 would be bit less in width, which might improve fuel consumption slightly.

I am not sure about Dunlop tyres for starters. But as I said, at the moment it's not about the big saving, as tyre prices in those sizes are pretty close. Seeing that the Fj60 does around 7000 - 8000 km a year or even less, a set of wheels is never warn down. I want to replace them due to age. I guess after 9 years tyres are not that fresh anymore.

Also not a dunlop fan..at all...but the SP Major is a exception, and also only available in that size. They used to run them on the untag cruisers.

Dunlops..... i dunno, i have had 2 sets. Not that impressed, although the new Dunlop Grandtrek AT3G look promising being 3 ply.

265/70/16 are very common and not too expensive. I paid R1900 odd a tyre for Hankooks about 2 months ago.
