    Default Contaminated Aircon

What is a Contaminated Aircon system. Did the compressor oil and the gas mix up? Impurities in the system?

Does it mean everything needs to be replaced. Compressor, Evaporator, Condenser, Expansion valve. Can it not just be flushed out?

Just condensation. Replace filter dryer, vacuum and refill.

I had that before, apparently when compressor starts to wear out, metal shavings find they way into the rest of the system where according to my installer its impossible to clean and know if all of it is flushed and cleaned.
Once you install new compressor, there is a possibility that this debris can enter the new installation and cause damage.

We had to change everything on his recommondation, and three years later still works beautifully.
    Its was Audi A4.

What vehicle is it. Kingswood is correct. Compressor starts collapsing and metal filings contaminate the system. What color is the oil in the system? Green or black?

This is for an old 1995 Land Cruiser SW. 1HDT.

The compressor gave up the other day coming back from Pta. Black (wat I assumed is) bakelite boiled out behing the clutch pulley. I pulled off the power connector. It was still mildly cooling up to that stage.

There are green oil residue/sweating 2 paces in plumbing.

I took it to a local aircon shop and they recommend that everything needs to be replaced. BWP13500-00.

It sounds like your clutch mechanism has died. It is external to the compressor. Find another aircon shop. You will be able to just replace the compressor. Get them to remove one of the pipes from the compressor in front of you. Have a look at the oil colour in there to make sure.. if itís green you are ok

Nothing here. I will have to cross border to SA. Any recommendation in Pta/Jhb.

Is it normal to have some oil in the pipes?

No, on an old school aircon that is extortion.

A new compressor, a flush, some gas and it should be OK.

It's what happens when the compressor grenades and spreads bit of metal throughout the system.

I had a really nice W123 Merc. Oem compressor grenaded on 290 000km. The Indy (Motospot in Retreat, THE old Merc people in CT) also said nope replace everything.

I said nah let's take a chance. They agreed on a no warranty basis, and system was flushed repeatedly and second hand compressor fitted. R5K later, I'm away and aircon seems fine. 20 000km later that one grenaded too.

This time everything was replaced, except this time we couldn't find a used compressor for cheap and some other parts had to be sourced new, so I paid nearly R20K. The fix lasted, the last time I checked the Merc had near 400 000km on and the aircon was still working.

I should have just spent the R12K initial quote.

It's your money, roll the dice. I lost, hopefully you'll get lucky.

    Hi Kobus

I got the same story on my GTI here.

Around P14K Barlow, P8K GW, got a recon in jhb for R3200... fitted here, gassed etc all done less than R5K.
