How likely is your vehicle to be stolen?

These are apparently SAPS figures, I can't vouch for it, neither can I say for which 12 month period it is. Does someone else have more info about this, maybe somebody in the Insurance industy?

Tell the guard (if he's not part of the scheme), that Mr ..... sent for the Bull Dozer / Excavator to be moved to another site.

By Monday, it's a thousand kms away, and working to make money!

That is acctually a very profitable line.

If you steal civils equipment, you are home free. No reg no. No gov database. Just the manufacturer.

If you are a contractor and you can get a R300,000 piece of kit for R50,000, you might just be tempted.

I am amazed that no KB 280 D/C were stolen.

Do any of you remember one Christmas holidays a few years ago where a site watchman thought his bonus was too small? He simply put a 44 gallon drum of diesel in the front of the site dumper and headed for the Transkei. He got as far as Sir Lowreys Pass before the Provincial cops pulled him over. Besides no drivers license , there was no numberplate (no anti theft screws either) no indicators, vehicle license or anything else.

A total does not tell the full story (even if it is correct) - you need to put the totals into context with the amount of such vehicles on the road ... and yes, the more popular the vehicle (new ones sold), the more to be stolen ... a % would have been interesting ...

If there is 10 stolen, but only 100 on the road, you have a 10% chance of being ripped off if you drive one. And 100 out of 10000 vehicles (like the Golf), it is only a 1% chance (or risk?) ... would thus like to know where the insurance companies get their statement "the Golf is the vehicle most stolen" from - perception of totals or % ?

As was mentioned above by Oupoot, such figures as quoted by the OP mean absolutely nothing.

In order to assess the risk of any particular vehicle type to be stolen, theft figures must be looked at as a % of such vehicles registered in the country. Then one must also consider the geographical area in which thefts have taken place.

But don't worry, the insurance companies employ very clever mathematicians to do this kind of calculations. You only have to look at your insurance premium relative to another vehicle type of the same value & same geographical are to see if your risk is lower or higher.
