Default Mankwe Bird Hide in Pillanesberg Burns Down

    Just received this image,

The hide burnt down with the recent fires. One can see the remaining structure in the background.

    Really enjoyed my birding there...

This is bad news! I wonder if they will have enough funds to rebuild it?

In not sure. We were there 3 weeks ago, and the main tar road from Bakubang is in quite a state of disrepair. Major pot holes, a degradation with no apparent indication of any attempt to address it.

If they canít maintain the roads, finances may be tight.

Possibly Sassol will step in a contribute as they have to many other hides? (I think itís Sassol ).

Can any mites advise if the hide has been rebuilt. Heading there next week and would love to know if one of the best birding spots is up and running again...

I was there in May and nothing yet. Not sure what's cooking there.

    Thanx Mtber,

Will have to look elsewhere for some binding opportunities then.

Just means planning some different routes....

Currently at Pilsanesberg. No progress on Mankwe.
Bathako dam hide is also closed, needing repairs. Friends-of has a sign up to say they are waiting on the water (and crocs) to recede before they can start. Targeted completion November iirc.
We did not drive up to Mankwe, so no idea about any possible signage there.
    Make it happen!

Nothing yet at mankwe, as far as I know they are still trying to raise funds to not only rebuild but improve. Holding thumbs

Pitty we can't get out and walk right to its edge. Tracking birds in flight with a camera such a joy from a car seat, sitting down, in one position.

It's a pitty car manufactures put those windscreen and posts in the way, surely they would consider us photographers ..
