Smile Nxai pan latest conditions updates, please

Anybody been there recently, last 6 - 8 weeks or so?

From older comments I have just been reading, it seems that the western access road (old road) is the better one and not the newer, eastern road closer to Baines boababs. Is this currently still the case?

We are taking drinking water and 100 l in the caravan's tank, but the water supply seems stable these days, correct?

Lastly, I booked number 2 but it seems that the ellies have destroyed most of the shade. Which other campsite(s) is recommended if can manages to swap sites at the gate, provided it is not fully booked?

The big tree on the western edge of site 2 gave good shade when we were there last year. Best is to check out the sites before booking in, then chance your options.

Thank you Frans. Yes, I saw the photo of site no 2 in your TR which I read again in part this afternoon. Do you perhaps have more photos of the site?

Don't mind the morning sun, but also agree that shade in the afternoon is a must.

I will check through my pictures, but don't think so. If I find more I will post here tomorrow.

The road from the entrance to the Baines turnoff is not that bad, the worst sand is from that turnoff until where the old W road and new E road join before arriving at Nxai Pan. I exited Nxai Pan on the western road until the link to the Baines road (mid July) - it was definitely better than the new road - but that can change quickly as it is traffic dependent.

Water supply and quality was fine - there were some issues but the staff sorted out fairly quickly.

Site 2 (I assume you are referring to South Camp) is nice - good views onto the pans and shade is fine, close to ablutions but still private. Downside a little more exposed to wind and because it blows predominantly from the East the dust of vehicles entering the camp site can blow into the site.

The other thing I forgot to ask: where to buy wood? I know there is usually nice mopanie for sale just before Francistown, but if we can buy closer to Nxai pan, it will be better in terms weight. Anywhere else? Nata lodge or Planet Boabab or Woodlands?

Firewood is available at the Nxai Pan shop - rather expensive though (they even take credit card). I bought quite nice bundles at the Engen garage in Nata, but they were also selling along the road in the vicinity of Planet Baobab.

Hopefully the new waterhole just NE of South Camp is operational when you get there - it will make a nice addition to the options available. It was nearly done when we were there.

I think campsite 2 used to be the best campsite at Nxai, but we last stayed there in 2015. I did read that the elephants took out some of the shade trees since. I would think there should be enough shade left for a single caravan though, Christa.

I liked 2 because it is more private than most of the other sites and also it fronts right onto the grassy pan and animals pass close by and you have a great view. You are also not too far from the very good ablutions. The ablutions water is good and fit for drinking as it comes from a borehole. We bought cheap wood from the roadside, lovely, dry, hard mopani.

At this time of the dry season if you hang out for a few hours at the main waterhole, your chances of seeing a lion or cheetah kill are good. This applies even during the heat of the day. I will be very interested to hear how the new waterhole is working. Hope the lions visit!

    Christa,

Agree with above statements wrt no 2. I do not have pictures giving a proper indication of the stand, however if a group I would consider getting more shade, as mentioned, for only one group it is the most private. The path from 2 to the ablutions could need a bit of clearing, once done it will last your stay. Here are the other pictures I have, sorry, not great. We used the western road in and out, some sand but not too bad, some corrugations and in places 3 to 4 choices of tracks, never used the eastern road, apart the section from camp to Baines, which becomes deep sand in places. I also added a photo of this section, nothing worse than exiting north from Khumaga.

Thanks so much Frans. So nice and green for your visit! We will find it much barer, I guess.

Just to orientate myself, is the caravan on the ablutions side of the campsite or no 1's?

Pleasure Christa. It is on ablution side of the site. If you look at the first picture, you can see the roof of ablutions behind. Just left of the tow hitch is the path I am talking about, also on pic 1.

Default Nxai pan latest conditions updates, please

No 2 is a good site, If no 1 is available maybe a better option.

If I remember correctly site 1 is on the other site of that ablution as you look at it on Frans pic 1 photo and I think it is the only site on that side.

That is correct, we were at number 1 last year May, more secluded but imho too small for more than two cars

If the new borehole and pan is sorted then No2 will be great again, read... the best.. Unfortunately it is a smallish site and yes, the ellies did damage the trees.

Aren’t there two ablutions, one east and one on the western side?

Yes there are 2 ablutions. The best ablutions you will find in Bots parks.

Doubt it will be chockers. If the site is no good, I will send betterhalf back to the office to procure a better one. The view or possibility of it sounds promising though.

Sure, will provide an update Frans. I can take a couple of photos for you of site no 10

I found this map of the camp layout on Google, not sure how accurate it is.

You can look on Google Earth as well, the 2 ablution blocks are clearly visible, but the campsites not so defined.

The map is reasonable, but number 2 is on the wrong side of the ablution. Number two should be east of the ablution, above number 3. Number 1 is the only site west of the ablution.
