    Default Mabuasehube info needed, PLEASE!!

Good day to all my fellow members!!
I’m not too active on the forum, by saying this, I like to read everyone’s posts, but very seldom start a TREAD.
In other words I can just as well say, this is my introduction to you all.
We are going to Mabua this December, can’t wait and very excited. Bookings are made and paid.
I know it will most probably be very hot that time of the year, but unfortunately, like all or most of us, this is the only time that I do not have to work.
I also know that there is most probably answers somewhere on the forum for my questions and excuse me if they have been answered, so please bear with me.
We will be two Hilux’s, the best by the way and I will be towing a Conqueror Commander. The other Hilux will not tow anything.

    My questions are as follows;

    1. December temperatures:

    • Have anyone been there during December?
    • How warm is it really there?
    • Does the temperature cool down during the night at least to have a good night’s rest?

    1. “Kaplyn” road: access road to Mabua

    • We will enter Botswana at Skilpadshek Border post.
    • Then will drive up towards Jwaneng/Kang’s direction
    • As far as I know, there is two ways to get to Mabua
      • Turn of left at Sekoma
      • Turn left at Kang
      • Which one of the two roads are the better one?

We would also like to overnight on one of the two roads, to have an early start the following day. Is this possible and where?

    • Does the temperature cool down during the night at least to have a good night’s rest? No does not cool down much except when a Kalahari thunderstorm hits.

See blue above. Don't underestimate the heat! Take enough, and I mean enough, drinking water. We drank 2 x 5 liters of water per day for the first 3 days when temps were touching 50 every day. The heat broke on the 4 th day and temperatures hung around 40. One has no appetite for anything except water in those conditions. Be very careful should you have small kids or babies with you.

WRT to the access road or cutline. Turning left at Kang? Never gone to Mabua like that, but it is a bit of a detour. We have always turned left at Sekoma and the took the Kokotsha cutline. However that is very, very corrugated and we will not ever use it again. Also you don't want to cross at Skilpadshek in December. We stood 3 hours on the 17th December last year.

I would suggest rather crossing at Tsabong. Stay over at Springbokpan guest farm on the SA side, cross early in the morning and take the Tsabong sand road. Much better road.

Tom Cruise, the heat will be tough. Take plastic water spray bottles with you and use them for relief. Also wet t-shirts and towels draped over your sweating bodies for relief day and night.

As mentioned ensure enough to drink, especially water about 5 liters per person per day. Otherwise take fruit cordials or squash to dilute the water with as you might become tired of drinking unflavored water. Fizzy soda drinks do not go down too well in the heat.

Considering your first time visit and if you have any concerns about towing the trailer:

I would say McCarthy's rust border post and the rd from Tsabong would be first choice.

The Kang-Hukuntsi rd is OK for heavy trailers. This comes down from the North but is a considerable detour from the normal routes to access Mabua unless you are coming from the North.

Another option would be crossing at Bray border post and this will give you the choice of taking the cut line which will also give the option of bush camping for the night or running down to Tsabong and taking the sand rd. The cut line is not particularly trailer friendly and you need to take it easy on that rd.

The Tsabong rd is 85 kms easy gravel and 35 deep sand.

Lots of options, pity about the Toyota's

It will be very hot, but everybody has to go to the Kgalagadi in summer at least once, you will get to know yourself very well

As said take a spray bottle with you to spray yourself, it really helps. Sleep on a wet towel if you can, keeping your chair wet also helps to keep cool, all though it does dry very quickly.

Make sure you have enough water for drinking, and most of all, enjoy!

Remember to add another 5l of water for spraying, wetting towels and chairs as well as for the quick cold showers during the day. 😓

You did not say which camps you got. Some will have water and the unwritten rule is that you can collect from those sites that have. Drinking water is what you need to take in, we normally disguise ours as beer.

We have been on CKGr & Kutse Dec 2018. The temperature usually was around 40 - 50 degrees.

Yes it was hot but not unbearably so. One acclimatizes within couple of days. Take plenty water with. Take a hat.
    And be sensible about it.

Everybody handles heat differently , yet nobody in our group had major issues with the heat.

Get in your car and go for a drive with the aircon at full blast if you it gets too hot

Or go for a shower - fully dressed .

    Hi Stranger,
We will be staying at Mabua pan stand 02 and 04.
Then 4 days at Twee Rivieren.
Then back to Mabua pan 01 and then Mpaya pan 02.
Unfortunate for the many camp moves and setups, but that’s what it is.

Hmm, not really, that could be an interesting trip and could be some fun logistics.

    If they were my bookings.

Go into Bots via Bray - Werda and then take the cut line to Mabua east gate.

I would NOT take the sand rd to KTP, but would rather come out and head to Tsabong and take the tar rd (in Bots) to Two Rivers/ Twee Rivieren.

I would do the reverse back to Mabua. This then gives you lots of options for fuel and provisions in Tsabong and considerable less worry than a Nossob/Mabua run over the dunes overloaded with food fuel and water .... and a trailer.

Choice of cut line or Tsabong to come out of Mabua, choice of Bray or Mc Carthy's for exit.

    Thanks .. Dear

My recommendation then also means that you do not need to do extra border crossing. You will stay in Bots for the KTP part.

Also no need to do the corrugated rd to Nossob. Good sightings around TR and Mata Mata and you get both the Aub and the Nossob river to explore at the South end of the park.

To be honest this sounds like a good stress free trip if you get the forward planning right. The bookings could actually work out in your favour.
