Default Why are sea birds eating plastic?

As per title ...I have seen some awful pictures and video of sea birds with their stomach packed full with plastic fragments, to the point that they can't ingest anything else .

Why land birds or fresh water birds are not so affected , even the ones that live in urban areas, which are full of plastic waste? I know that storks and plovers at times have plastic bits in their stomach , but not to the extent of sea birds.

    Thanks

Lots of sea birds seldom see land and scavenge for food, before plastic only organic bits were picked up and passed through the gut naturally.

See fish eat plastic and have plastic in its stomach and even flesh
See the sea bird eat the fish
See plastic end up in bird

    So ends the lesson.

The bulk of plastic ingested by sea animals are ingested directly (including sea birds). The floating pieces of plastic is often confused as being food (eg jelly fish, with a similar semi-translucent appearance).

    Indirect ingestion obviously also occurs.

I always wondered why when I watch crows , bulbuls and other birds they know very well what's edible from what's not. I wonder if modifying the chemical composition of plastic could work, if a formula could be found that does not release sulphur.
Thanks for the video link and the replies .
