Default Ford 2.5tdi - Engine replacement

    Hi there

Im new to forum, so forgive me if I don't follow the rules on posting to the correct thread. Just bought a '04 Ford ranger 2.5 tdi 4x4. Long story short, the engine is kaput but Im still driving it. My mechanic, who I trust, and not a backyard cowboy, advises I replace the engine with an import. Just wanting some advice on: Any engine importers recommendations? Should I think about changing to petrol engine, and then what are the implications? Im thinking 3.0 V6, is that a wise swop? Im not looking for speed or power, just reliability. The bakkie has 236000kms. Any advice will be appreciated. Many Thanks Chris.

Changing from diesel to petrol is normally not easy on modern vehicles because you will also need to change the ecu/wiring harness and diesel pumps/filters and maybe even gearbox for suitable ratios.

That 2.5tdi should be able to reach 500,000km if serviced properly and treated well.

Imported engines will be around R30k for a bench tested low mileage version.

    Try www.enginesandmore.co.za

they can courier to CT if the local guys don't have good engines in stock

It started with low oil pressure at idle, so my mechanic took out the sump and found the main bearing with scratched and the crank had been machined before. So we took the gamble and just replaced the bearings and the problem stayed. The rings are also worn. Its also very sluggish. So he suggested a new engine. Replacing the crank, bearings and rings might be the same price as replacing the engine. Thanks for the response. Mikes seems to have the best online reviews.

yep a complete strip down and refurb will be around R40k with labour and parts

get the import engine, replace any service items (belts, tensioners, filters, oil, etc) and it should be good

Just talk to me , most of the time people replace and change a lot of things on these engines unnecessary.

    Hi DVR

Thanks for you input, Im busy researching the import motors, pro's vs cons and possibly trade it in and upgrade to a newer vehicle. If I come unstuck, I'll get in touch. Thanks so much.

    Chris
