Default Cape Town motorist robbed - Baden Powell Drive

At the weekend friends who stopped near the Wolfgat view site on Baden Powell Drive to take a photo of the Bay were immediately held up by two men who had been hiding in nearby bushes . One had a knife and they were robbed of cells, drivers licences, ID's, Nike shoes and sun glasses.

Luckily one cell escaped the thieves attention and they were able to call the Police who were very quick to respond and extremely helpful and professional.

Are your friends new to the area/capetown because that is "no go" zone.

It's like going into Soweto at night and think nothing will happen.

I have no idea why people even drive on that road. You are 100% assured that if you stop your life is in danger.

Stupid question. Can one nowadays just dial 10111 from your cellphone? A few years back there was an accident in my street, I tried to dial 10111from my cellphone, it gave me the incorrect number tone and did not dial through.

Then, canít remember how - I got through, but Police from Cradock answered. Bare in mind, Iím from PE.....

112 from your cell and 107 from your land line in Cape Town. Always get answered.

That area is a cesspool of criminal activity.
Even the non criminal might have a crack at you if you stop.
But if you are robbed and most cases your phone is taken from you, then how do you contact the emergency numbers, like, you cant ask the crook if you can make one last call.

People and citizens have to become street wise and suss out the situation....

    To be fair:

Where they stopped, it looks cleanish. Not knowing the area will set you up thinking maybe safe?

But, Khayalitsha being 2min away, it is not safe!

Not long ago road works on the R310 forced one to go through Khayelitisha, which wasn't a problem during the day.

A while ago I used to take my staff home at night, Mfuleni, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, etc, all around midnight.

The worst was seeing an Avanza getting hijacked right in front of us, the hijackers waved us past, clearly not interested in the Prius. And one night I got a flat tyre, so changing it in the middle of Mfuleni was a nerve wrecking affair. If I did not have 4 staff with me I'd have driven to safety, even if it destroyed the tyre and rim.

I'm not saying these areas are an automatic death sentence, but it's best avoided unless you can help it.

But stopping on Baden Powel, sorry never.

Getting to a stage where anyplace outside your front door is a 'no go zone' and the back door is a bit dodgy too.

There are thousands of people using that road. I drive it once a week. The worst I have seen it was traffic piled up from the traffic circle in Muizenberg all the way to the robot at Mitchells Plain.

It does not matter where one stops to get out and take photos, in South Africa all roads near informal settlements are no-stop zones!
