Default Stofkraal Guest Farm and 4x4 Route

We booked at the Stofkraal Guest Farm, having read a few great reviews on online. The farm is 32km outside the town of Sutherland, on Williston Road. The road is gravel and very corrugated in places. Upon arriving at the farm we were greeted by Martin, who warmly welcomed us and took us to our chalet. We stayed in the Donkey cottage which faces the currently dry river (the drought has taken its toll in Sutherland) and we immediately felt relaxed and at home. The furnishings are simple yet cosy and everything you need is at hand. The beds are all equipped with electric blankets and extra bedding to keep the cold at bay, which we needed as the weather was below freezing at night.

Our first night Martin invited us and other guests to do a stargazing, which he doesn't charge for. He calls himself an amateur but we found him very knowledgeable and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. His telescope is powerful enough to clearly show the rings on Saturn and the stripes on Jupiter.

When I arrived Martin had left the Dec 2017 article of Sa4x4 in my chalet where his 13km 4x4 route has a write up (https://www.sa4x4.co.za/trail-review...ock-and-stone/). I didn’t even know he offered the 4x4 route when booking so I was pretty keen to try it out, but being one car I was worried about recovery etc. Luckily Martin takes you on the route with his very modified 2.7 Toyota Hilux with 33 inch tyres and a monster lift.

The route costs R200 and took me around 4 hours to complete the 13km. Part of the route is stopping and walking through some amazing terrain to caves and bushman rock art, so call it a 3 hour drive if you don’t enjoy hiking. The route its self was made by Martin and his 10 pound hammer and towing a tractor tyre behind his Hilux, it took 4 months to create. This from a guy in his sixties....

It’s a very technical drive in places and takes you through breath taking country. Martin will guide you through the more difficult sections and even pack rocks for you. It’s not a route for beginners as getting tyre placement wrong could easily result in sliced side walls, something that happened to the previous guy that did the track. There is also a massive 600mm rock ledge, but with some track building and strategic wheel placement it’s a nice obstacle to tackle. There are some hectic climbs where good clearance and diff lock are needed, and a monster downhill where I had my adrenaline pumping.

Overall this has got to be my favourite route to date. It’s technical and offers great views of the surrounding country. Martin is also a legend who’s local knowledge and skill is greatly appreciated.

I will post some pictures and videos once i download them all from my phone.

I can't remember now. He posted the build of his route here some time ago and I asked him about his SFA Hilux. But no, can't remember. Sorry

Ok no worries. That Hilux is pretty neat, it just crawls over everything. I think he said he put Landcruiser springs in and a solid front axle. Not to mention the 33 inch tyres.

    Looks interesting.

Maybe do a group booking and tackle that trail!
Always think: Could this be sarcasm?
