Default Selfish, Ignorant, 4 Wheel Drivers

Just a rant, an occasional 4 wheel driver can be an ignorant pain in the butt, as I discovered today.

I am a beekeeper and the truck is 4 wheel drive, mostly because where I live I have to drive through some pretty wet conditions.

I have bees on a government owned reserve but to get to them I have to pass over some wet places, virtually unpassable through the wet season. Building a road is not affordable but over time I have trucked in gravel and constructed 2 wheel rut "bridges" to get me through the really bad bits, long as I drive on them carefully they hold up and don't deteriorate very quickly. I don't really have the time to mess with getting stuck and using the winch too often.

So I went there today, and found the place totally torn up by ignorant thrill seekers who entered by unhinging a gate, and don't give a crap about the environment. They deliberately targeted the parts I have worked on, barging through, getting stuck, presumably towing out, and obviously wheel spinning and gunning it and destroying a lot of the work I have done. Where there used to be 2 wheel rut gravel tracks that could be carefully driven on, there are now deep bog holes and the gravel is scattered throughout the mud.

No doubt these a holes will be back for more fun so I'm installing 2 cameras, these guys are not even supposed to be there.

Me? Yes I like a bit of fun but I don't do it by knowingly destroying something that someone has plainly constructed.

You get yobs and knobs in any country, this is true.

Luckily in NZ the authorities have some backbone.

..and unfortunately this give us all a bad name and make land owners hate us. The same thing happened with quad riders, what started as a expensive hobby ended up as a hatted bread, just due to some individuals and now land owner still have that idea when it comes to us enduro riders.

Perhaps if you are the only traveller on that road, dig a deep wide ditch after the gate. When you want to enter, toss a portable bridge over. It only has to be a meter wide.
