    Aaaah the memories!!

I remember how my little 50cc struggled up that road on the way home from school. Had to gear down as low as 2nd and give it full taps

    Hi Gents,

Thanks for the advice. Nice quiet road. Enjoyed that, BUT Vryheid has changed a bit since the photo's . he he . Still a lovely place though. I heard that there is only about 3000 whities left as there is not really work there anymore. Also a lot of the farmers are threatening not to plant anything. Is it true, are the guys serious or is it just gossip ?

I arrived in Vryheid as a 4 year old in 1972 and matriculated from VHS in 1986 and finally left in 1989 - although I have been back often. I was/am scarred that if I reply to this thread I will not stop as reading this just brought the memories flooding back. I will just share a few random ones and would like to see any replies. So who can remember this:

The Jacaranda trees in full bloom lining the streets,
The yearly easter show at the "skougronde",
The huge sports days between VHS and Pionier (today I have more friends that are ex-Pionier than VHS and must say that they actually decent people),
The small plane droning overhead every Saturday, ferrying skydivers,
The "spietkop" Vossie on his red CX500 Honda,
"Willem se den" and Oom Willem talking big hunting stories,
    Club rugby at Cecil Emmet,
Taking a ride on our fifties to Bloemveld and Grootgewaacht dams,
All the rumours (and truths) about terrorist activities in the surrounding areas,
The very long "nagmaal dienste" in the "Klipkerk",
Playing snooker at the VHS boys hostel - there was a full-sized table,
Having a few or many beers at Stilwater,
Standing on the pavement outside the school where all the fifties where parked and watching in sheer wonder as Bok came past on his XT 500 doing a high speed wheelie,

    and on, and on.....

Was a magic place to grow up. It has changed a lot but if you scratch a lot of the charm is still there.

Oh, and a heady mix of German, English and Afrikaans girls...

    Mooi bly.

Dan sal julle sekelik my ma onthou, sy was onderwyseres by VHS, juffrou Bester.
My oorlede nefie, Herman Reiche, sy twee susters, Gretel en Brunie.

Ek en Willem Schoombee het toe ons nog in Kabouterland creche was, sakke gepak en op die treinspoor langs vanaf Kommissie Straat tot by my tannie-hulle se plotjie net voor Stilwater Hotel, gestap.
    Groot pakslae daaroor gekry.

Die foeffieslide by die dam? Sondagskool by die NG Klipkerk.

Ja, erge mooi, onskuldige, sorgelose herineringe, Vryheid.

    Heimwee...

Ja, onthou jou ma baie goed.

Ek, Herman (Reiche ), Dieter Weber en Herman Fouche het net kort voor sy dood n week in die Kruger Wildtuin spandeer.

Brunie was my register juffrou in std 6.

My pa Philip Nell, was ook lank n onderwyser by VHS.

Die man wat die hardste n rottang kon swaai by VHS was Fish Pienaar, LO onderwyser. Iemand anders sy lat geproe?

    Vryheid memories!

I worked at Hlobane Colliery 1979 - 1981, and the small plane overhead may just have been the one I sky dived out of

    And yes.....Stilwater ....

    And yes.....The girls....

    Kan jy nou meer!
Ons is '79/'80 daar weg, Pietermaritzburg toe, maar my ma het daar groot geword.
Maar die helderste en gelukkigste herinneringe van kind wees is van die tyd in Vryheid.
