Default 2. 5 gearbox running very hot.

Good day everyone. I just replaced the gearbox on my 2.5 Mazda Drifter 4x4. The gearbox and transfer case are both full of oil and there are no funny noises or vibrations coming from them. Yet, this gearbox runs extremely hot. So hot that it actually burns my leg next to the tunnel inside. I first had 15w40 (Shell Helix) oil in the gearbox and EP90 (Castroll) in the transfer case. This morning I had the 15w40 replaced with EP90. The gearbox is still running at the same temperature. Anyone had a similar problem that could shed some light?

Try and get your hands on Castrol BOT 402. I put it in my gearbox on my Ranger 2.5TD after having the 5th gear fixed and haven't looked back. Shifts really smooth and not running hot.

A word of warning, it's not cheap, but it's cheaper than rebuilding the gearbox again by far...

    EP90 is the wrong oil

    15W40 is the wrong oil

A good 75W90 or 80W90 would be better for the gearbox. (as per the owners manual)

the transfer case seems to need a good ATF like Dexron III

You need an oil with a SAE 80W-90 viscosity in the gearbox and transfer-case.

15-40 is way to thin and EP90 is also wrong.

I seem to be getting an idea why the previous gearbox was replaced............

Thanks Jelo. I see the service manual is for the 2006 and later model. I have the 2000 model. Do you think the same oil should be used? I used the 15w40 because the guy who sold me the gearbox as well as a previous technician I spoke to recommended it. I found my slip for the oil I bought this morning and it's Castrol Axle EPX80w90. Which makes it the right oil then. As per the manual. The Dexron III seems to be a General Motors or Ford Trademark. What would a good equivalent be?

Exactly. Had 5th gear repaired and used 15w40 in that box. As recommended by repair technician. One week later 3rd and 4th gears seized up. At first thought it to be bad repair job, but now I'm wondering if it was not the oil. Now I bought a second hand box from an engine importer and they also recommended 15w40.

Hierdie ratkas brand my been dwars deur n dik Flameproof overall broek.
