    Default Shu Shu Hotsprings

Hi All, Every winter i tell my family we must go for a day trip to investigate the shu shu hot springs....and every year it never happens. I would like to make a weekend day trip up there towards the end of August. Are there any other fourmites that have been there and know the ropes that would like to do a day trip out there again..... would rather go with someone that knows the first time.

I have three vehicles that are keen but non of us have been before.

    Hi Guys,

We planning to head up to Shu Shu this weekend, but the group is a bit concerned about security, especially since current times are desperate times.

Any advise on this? How have those that have been there found the security?

Want to put the group at ease, but also not lead them into danger

Assuming that you did this outing ?
    Any report back ?
What is the location of this place and what, if any facilities are there ?
    Costs ?
    Road or off-road conditions, etc.?

Peter, Shu Shu is closed at the moment due to the COVID thing, people going there are doing so illegally, some "organizing" with the local chief.

Camping is on the wild side, nothing that you and Erika aren't use to, there is no big open grass area with nice trees ext as a normal camper would expect to find when he gets to a "camping area"

The road is good, most of it has actually been tared now.

    Thank you Chris.
Ya, this damn Corona virus is ... well ... what it is, I guess.

We really miss just getting out there.
Very envious of those like Leeubok who are self isolated in game reserve (as in employed there) !!!
I would offer my services free to be isolated like that.

Hope that you and family are all a-ok.
    Thanks for the info.

Also, it's not the safest place to be around, the area that I am referring to. It's the Tugela river Kranskop/Ntembeni area. You being from KZN will know what goes on in that area mostley. Especially now with the lock down, all those guys are at home, Whatsup me and we can talk about it more.

Thank you both for this information.
I had no idea that such a place existed.
However the safety issue mentioned is concerning and also given the comment by Chris regarding using Sean's hummer instead of Chris's Land Cruiser makes me think the the old Suuz would not do too well especially with a trailer on the back !!

What a great story though - those were the days.
We grew up in a small (then) southern cape town and experienced the forests, hills and valleys literally outside of our property - as kids, use to play in the "wilds" with little concern for security, safety was limited to worrying about snakes etc. not other humans.
    But we ran free.
This place seems to have been something similar.

If you guys do decide to make a trip down there please keep me in the loop - (We would have to decide if it would be practical for us oldies from both health and (old)vehicle points of view as well as the safety issue.)

Yes, there are still MANY places to be discovered in our own country and even virtually on our own doorstep, so to speak, that we are not even aware of.

Peter, the vehicle thing was just a joke.
You can quite easily get there in a city golf now that the road has been tarred.

This Corona thing has locked us down for toooo long and really need to get out. put my name down for that trip.

(Chris, I hope the landy can make it otherwise your Cruiser can do some recovery training)

We camped there 3 or 4 years ago. If you camp on the island then you must carry everything through the river. The locals helps with this but I feel bad for them if you see what the campers ask them to carry. It's insane. Be ready to negotiate a price for this. Never too much. If you want to, arange with the elder of the ladies to smear your camp with manure. It dries into a hard floor that help keeps the dust at bay. Bring lots of games, fishing poles and walking shoes as except for the hotsprings that is your entertainment. Also be ready to dig(or negotiate a dig for a longdrop) and bring your own seat or portapotty. There is no drinkable water, plan ahead. Hot water for dishes is always a quick walk away even if it smells like sulphur.

The baths are an experience! They are cordened off with sails and have names like "Oupa se bad" - lukewar. Or "Witbad" - scorching hot. The family campers are the ones to chat about the camping customs. If camping with a trailer or off road caravan you will stay on the shore, take plakkies as there are a lot of thorns.

Hi Peter, no we did not, the group was scared off with Stories about how much more dangerous it would be now that the community would be badly affected by COVID.

can't blame them, safety 1st, so we went to another awesome spot.

We do however want to do a recce, to see for ourselves, before we take the family with.

It seems like there is a lot of interest in this place from form members.
I recon it is a place that should be visited at least once, just to say that you have been there and done that.

If you guys are keen on a day trip and a braai and looking for someone to take you down there, then lets organize it, I'm more than happy to do it.

I'm just busy for the next few weekends.

Just out of interest, did you know that there is a simular place, hot water, at Port St. Johns?

Used to be a very nice place to be.
Certain time of the year a BIG family gathering used to take place there, then nobody else allowed (can't remember when and who)

The different baths used to be one for females only, one for males and one for the kids al screened off from each other and a mix of others.
Last time we were there was for a day visit, the river was running high, so we could not get across

Haven't been there for decades, road was dirt and everything you take in you take out.
Used to be a long drop on the one side away from the camp area.
Trees were named and had different uses, e.g. bathroom, kitchen etc.

There was a narrow bridge over the river, understood that all are now tarred
