That certainly does not help. They should wear balaclavas like riot police in France? to prevent identification.

    Zille statement tonight

Just on my way back from Hermanus/Zwelihle now. Heard first hand accounts from residents of Zwelihle about the extent of the violence and intimidation they face.

Apart from public facilities (the destruction of the library and swimming pool complex) private houses have been burnt. People who went to work had their clothing and furniture removed from their houses and burnt in the street. And most gruesomely, some pets have suffered the same fate.

While the police have contained the situation, it is impossible to prevent random roaming groups of thugs from causing this mayhem. There are now threats to burn the clinic and the school.

All political parties and civil society stakeholders, from the churches to the business leaders, speak with one voice in condemning these dreadful acts of violence, which are rooted in internal political contestation within Zwelihle.

Thugs are now moving from house to house extorting money for legal fees from residents. Sadly the trauma seems set to continue tomorrow. It always amazes me how much mayhem a small band of thugs can wreak on a community.

There is so much trauma, I am shaken to the core. Let's hope sanity prevails. ^HZ

Western Cape police are monitoring the situation in Hermanus after ongoing protests escalated on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk described the situation as "very volatile" and said police would continue monitoring the situation.
"Police and other law enforcement agencies will remain in the area until law and order is restored," he said.
"We appeal to those participating in the protest to do so within the ambit of the law."

Van Wyk said all roads had since been opened.
On Saturday, more than 100 protesters moved from Zwelilhle to Malva Street in Mount Pleasant.
"Protesting community members started throwing stones at the SAPS members on patrol," he said.

"We also received information that some protesters [from the Zwelihle community] were making petrol bombs. Hermanus public protectors control room informed SAPS about ... approximately 1 000 people gathering at the Zwelilhle Taxi rank."
At the time, Van Wyk said between 100 and 200 protesters took to the streets. He said that thus far, a total of 42 arrests had been made since Wednesday.
Zwelihle Renewal spokesperson Theron Mqu said residents were no longer protesting about land. Instead, their intention was to demand that Zwelihle Renewal's Gcobani Ndzongana be released from police custody.

All quiet thus far this morning - strike continues

The area outside of Zwelihle is still quiet, and the roads surrounding Zwelihle are quiet with no sign of the usual Monday morning bustle of people going to work.

    The strike continues.

The R43 is open, access roads into Zwelihle are closed. Strong SAPS, POP and LE presence on the scene.

    Protestors block Joburg's N1

Traffic on the N1 south at the Samrand turnoff has been blocked as protesters walked on to the highway.

Radio 702 reported that protesters with banners made their way on to the highway on Monday morning.
It is reported that Metro police members arrived on the scene to prevent protesters from crossing the road to block both sides of the highway.
Google Maps data shows that there are heavy delays at the N14 and N1 intersection.

The R43 is closed again today due to protests.
Unconfirmed reports that some firms in the industrial area have been told to evacuate.

The mood is tense. The R43 is closing and we appeal to you to stay off the roads as far as possible. Mount Pleasant School is closing.

The trouble is really confined to the township so you should be fine BUT the community leader who has been arrested is appearing in court for bail hearing tomorrow. If he is not released there could be more problems.

There are a few whales around - I saw nothing today - it is a bit early in the season.
Mid-to end of August should be much better.

Pics are shots today of township roads.

    Latest from SAPS:

the situation in Zwelihle is critical, however it is contained to within the boundaries of Zwelihle and the surrounding area is calm.

The authorities are working hard to keep rioters back. The R43 is open, access roads to Zwelihle closed. There is a strong presence of SAPS, POP, Law Enforcement and Traffic officials on the ground. The Mall and Gateway are open, with some shops having closed at their own discretion.
