    Question Which Dashcam

I have been debating replacing the cheepie dashcam I presently use(R199 18 months ago). It uses an old type cell phone battery, which goes flat at the drop of a hat,and with constantly being on charge, usually last about two months if I'm lucky. Also the date and time function goes out of whack, almost daily!
Now: Do I go the whole hog and get a Garmin(R2009 at Makro) or go for something cheaper ? I like all the Garmin's functions, especially being able to sync it with my phone.
A "reasonable" dashcam is about R1000, and most of them are gimmicky, twin lenses for inside and outside and also rear facing camera!
What to do,as I am a firm believer in having a dashcam!

I am hoping to have some new stock available soon, with wifi connectivity to download footage. To me that has become more important that gps and mapping integration.

I bought this one a month ago and I am very happy with it.

    https://www.dhgate.com/product/dual-...410816583.html

The picture is clear and it seems to be a good enough quality device. The max card size is 32gig and I bought two type 10 (video quality) cards. I do however feel that it is a bit small. We had it rolling the whole trip to Bots/Zim and back and you can only get about 6 hours onto one card, so for extended trips you will need 6 or more cards unless you download every evening. I want to try recording 480p or 720p rather than 1080p. If the quality is OK, I will be happy.

It comes with a cigarette lighter plug cord and can run only for about 30 seconds on its own battery. This is to record should your car be parked and it "feels" a bump and needs to start recording. I did not bother with the second (rear facing) camera.

One other thing though, the recording clips are only 3 min 40 secs long, then it starts a new clip. Maybe lower res clips will be longer. When full, the newer file overwrites the oldest.....

The next thing will be to get video editing software.....

Key is to get one which over writes “first in, first out”....saves you having to frequently do a back up.... Sod’s law and memory card is full when you unfortunately have an incident.

Also night resolution is important imo.

I bought one too, R200. It needed a R200 memory card, and lasted exactly one month before the glue gave up and it came apart. I could probably glue it back together...

Dashcams seems a great example of you get what you pay for.

Friends from the USA brought it with after I identified it on Wallmart's website. It was on Special @ $20. They came on safari a month ago and brought it with them.

I have had my eagle eye V2 dash camera for almost 4 years now with absolutely no issues. Records everything you need including gps data and the camera overwrites older files automatically(You can protect files if need). I have only changed the 32gig memory card about a month ago. The camera warned me that there was a memory error.

    Thumbs up Re: Which Dashcam

Well against my own better judgement, I bought another cheapie(R480)! It arrived within two days as promised, but actually bore little resemblance to the one pictured?
Whilst i was setting it up, the screen just went grey, and nothing worked! Sent a mail to the supplier, and he promised to send me a new one, which arrived late the next day.
This one set up perfectly, so I installed it in my car, and went merrily on my way. On Friday I decided to down load the footage off the card, and would you believe I had 37 loop recordings of precisely nothing!
The new one didn't record anything!
Luckily the seller is nearby so I returned both units to them and good as their promise, the refund was in my bank within ten minutes!
I would love to get myself on of the ones that films in car and rear camera too, but I just wonder if they aren't too gimicky?

    From this: https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...ice-Department

I want a dashcam (two actually - one for each car) that can:

    1. Record continuously when driving / standing and parking (bonus would be if it can record when switched off and something happens, but that's a luxury)
    2. No need to clear memory card constantly - should override itself
    3. I want it for if "something" happens - roadblocks, accident etc - must be able to record audio in the car.

For now, that's all I need. I can look at fancier ones down the line, but I am looking a value for money dashcam.

    Any pointers?

I have a dash camera that should overwrite. It doesn't. I do have oversized card and it gets full quickly. Some cameras will not work over 32 Gb cards. Big problem is that the file format is most of the time MOV. Big files, no compression. I found one, which takes 128 Gb card and uses MP4 format and then I forgot to check GPS. Not there. Our still cameras have GPS so it is not that big issue.
