I am planning on going there for the first time next August. Sightings of birds and other wildlife good enough then, seeing as it is in the middle of the dry season?

Very nice photos, and you saw lions!!
We were up there in June for about 8 days, stayed at Rooiputs mainly and then 2 nights at Twee Rivieren. Despite the dire warnings re Lions in the campsite we saw none - but were rewarded with very good cheetah sightings. Even Swambo was not too grumpy at the -4 degrees early morning temperature. Yes and the birdwatching is very rewarding.

Thanks for sharing!! Last year and the one before, we stayed at Nossob, but this October we have booked 4 nights at Mata and 3 nights at Rooiputs. It feels like August and September are going to be the LONGEST months.

Visited Nossob for 3 days in June. Sighting of all the usual culprits and birds but the big cats eluded us.
They were however dragging the roads around Nossob on our entry and departure.
We saw 3 Cheetahs but the really lousy etiquette of the other viewers caused us to drive on. Very disappointing behaviour! Cheetahs are not really that rare a sighting there, saw one on a ride the following day and had her all to ourselves.
Absolutely great park and will be going again shortly.
Next trip Mata Mata and a wilderness camp if available.

Hi Stranger. For when are your bookings? About a month ago I tried for Rooiputs and Polentswa in March or April 2019 - without success.
How does the DWNP booking periods work? ....so that I can deal with my disappointment!...and plan for later in 2019.
    Cheers. Jack

My bookings are for 9-10 Jan and 17-18 Jan. Mata Mata in between. We have a habit of staying over the Xmas period to service my clients if they get into trouble over their holiday period, so we then try when other folks get back. It is evident that this is what has happened here too. First call to DWNP and I got the sites I wanted. No 1 for the first visit and No 4 for the second visit.

As mentioned to Witklipbank, when you look at the San parks site, you can see when the peak times are by the number of bookings available. I use this as a yard stick for picking dates sometimes.

I feel very sorry for the guys that have to plan leave around school holidays, I know guys that have spent fortunes on timeshare and/or points and still can't get what they want

Considering how you usually camp, TR is going to seem like Sandton city car park. Still, great park to visit.
