Default Carb Balancing Tool......where to get/how to make one??

Does anyone know where to get a Carb Balancing Tool, soecifically to work on the Pinzgauer's twin Zenith carbs?? It's a in line 4 cylinder aircooled motor, petrol 2500cc.

Or is there a way to make something "makeshift"??

    THANKS

Sorry I cant help apart from saying decades ago I would have used a stethoscope or "listening tube"

    --------

But a little story. I knew a guy who was a friend of my dad that had a second hand car dealership.

So Sunday morning he wakes up and decides the 12 Cylinder Lambo is not idling so smooth. Hauls out the screw driver and starts fiddling with the 6 Double Barrel Dellorto carbs. In no time the car is rougher than a bears a$$ and he cant fix it.

Keep in mind this was around 1980. Only solution eventually after trying all avenues - fly a mechanic out from Italy with the knowledge and tools to fix.

    -----

Balancing manual carbs is not for the fainthearted.

Oom Petri. My advice, buy a tool from Highveld Garage in Pta - http://www.hge.co.za/index.php?route...scription=true for not much money and rather pay someone some good money to teach you how to use the synchro tool. Spend money once and from then on you can do it yourself (or if you mess it up you know who to call and have the tool to fix it).

Pull all the plug leads. But put them on so that they still can spark.

    Now start the engine.

Pull off each lead and listen to the revs. The revs must drop equally on every missing spark lead that is disconnected.

I tried it last night with my daughters 125cc scrambler. Works like a charm! Every time I pulled the plug the revs dropped to 0.

    Overkill - isn't!

Some advice, make sure your carbs have the ports/connections to use a setup like rabbitdog, as there was another type you placed over the intake of the carb.

    Didn't know about that.

All the bikes, cars and boat motors I have worked on used the vaccume tubes.

I agree, while I found the thread interesting I wanted to know what carbs were fitted to that engine, did the Google thing and found that it was a Zenith - NDIX 36. From the few exploded views I browsed I found no mention of a vacuum port, there may well be one, but did see pics of people using the one I posted, hence my post.

As I opened the forum my eyes caught this thread . And my first reaction was ! I got one.
Just yesterday I was sifting through some stuff in a very special crate I was hiding under some things in the corner of the store room.
Guess what was in there ? a carb balancing tool.
On that moment a was thinking way back about all the SU and Weber carbs I sat for hour with !

What you need is a "snail gauge", it will be much easier to use than traditional vacuum gauges. In addition you will find a wide band AFR meter a great help too.

Then, as was mentioned above it would be a good idea to spend some time with someone who knows how to set carbs. You cannot do it when the engine is cold and you have to know the manufacturer's recommended setup procedure.

The carburettors on the Pinzgauer are antiquated, no really, Zenith as a brand faded away more than 40 years ago so parts and jets are expensive, if you can source them. In your shoes I would have been looking at replacing them with throttle bodies and basic fuel injection or even a set of 36mm downdraught Webber units for which rebuild kits, venturis, emulsion tubes and jets are readily available if you know where to look.

By all means keep the original carburettors and manifolds for the next owner who wants absolute originality but trust me when I say you would be streets ahead starting with a more modern and/ or tuneable fuel system if you want to actually enjoy and use your vehicle.
