The first step is to make sure both carbs are synchronised, ie. that both carbs open at the same time. Put your fingers on each linkage and get someone else to press the accelerator. Your eyes are not as good as your fingers. I set both carbs idle screws in the same positions.

With the engine running, take a 4mm pipe about 1m in length, put one end to your ear and the other end to the carb throat and then listen for the hissing sounds. Now place the pipe on the other carb in exactly the same position as the first carb and see if there is a difference in sounds. Move your mixture or idle screws a quarter of a turn to get the hang of it. NB. Always remember how many turns you turn each screw.

Once you are used to it, just adjust the carbs to balance them. That will get you in the ballpark.

The jets could have been changed for sea level with the previous owner so you may need to change them for higher altitude.

Check your float levels, air and fuel jets if you open the carbs. Make sure the carbs are not sucking air - don't over tighten the carb base nuts or bolts - that will cause the carb base to warp. If you suspect a leak, spray a small amount of quick start at the base of the carb while running. If it revs higher then you have a leak.

As always make sure the fuel filter is not blocked, plugs are set correctly and that your ignition timing is right and that the plug wires are ok. If you have a fuel pressure gauge then check your fuel pressure as well. I always do timing, plugs, valve clearances etc before touching the carb.

Carburettors are not rocket science, they are just very finicky measuring instruments.

Old carburetors suffer from worn shafts, worn needle and seats, perished seals and o-rings all of which create vacuum leaks, fuel leaks, clogged jets etc.

This is why I recommended Petri take a look at FI or new carbs.

I have over the last 10 years learnt one heck of a lot about carburetors. They are wonderful when set correctly and dogs when even the tiniest detail is overlooked. It is not a hobby for those who do not have time or those who are not detail oriented.

When I still had the G-Wagon I visited these guys:

    Carb City 460 Church Street Pretoria - 012 323 3043

Old school mechanics that set up the carb on the kalenderwa perfectly within a couple of minutes.
