    Question 1953 Jeep CJ6 - Ex military

    Hi Guys,

I need a little bit more info on the Jeeps that were built for SA Military. I found an ex military Jeep sitting in a garage for the last 10 years. Looks like a good project.

Owner claims it is a 1953 CJ6 but he might have the model wrong. I has all the military convoy lights and on the rear space for 2 Jerry cans and a spare wheel.

Canvas frame is in tact, but the canvas is MIA. Looks like original 2.2 Hurricane motor.

Unfortunately it is difficult to get pictures as it is buried under a pile of blankets and parachutes.

Not sure whether this will help. The Jeep on the trailer is an ex military CJ 6.1958 model,
    4 cyl, 3 speed gearbox.
The blue is after I did a rebuild with some modifications.

    Hi Explorer,

I think what I found resembles the Jeep on the trailer. Is there more value in keeping it original vs pimping it ?

This one has split window and full compliment of military lights and frame for soft top. The most important thing that is missing is the original wheels if I decide to restore vs pimp.

That is the real question. A fully restored SADF CJ6 in matt nutria brown will look cool. But might get you into trouble with the government.

    I had a CJ5. Not ex military.
I restored it back to it original shape with the 3.8 AMC motor. Only difference was the wheels as I did a bit of offroading with it so wanted wider mud tyres but sold it with the old rims separately. I even imported some of the hood latches and hinges from USA to keep it original.

In the end a collector bought it from me for around R150k. On the offer he gave me i tested the water in gumtree and there were several people offering me in that region provided its original and with papers.

If you look at gumtree now and you find these with the V6/V8 motors they rarely sell for over R60k.

But the original motor is not the most wonderfull drive and neither is the original blade springs. So if its for restore and sell it makes sense to do a original restore.
But for driving and playing offroad its not so nice.

Most likely I would want to paint it something different than the dark green most of these get painted ..... very few people can do cammo, local millitary brown is a No No, so I think a desert sand colour will look great. Maybe use the insignia from the LRDG "Long Range Desert Group".

Then I would look at a matt desert sand. Very neutral and is in fact standard on MANY vehicles so the officials can't get nasty. CAMO IS OUT.

This technique could give the finish and durability you need:

Red face Re: 1953 Jeep CJ6 - Ex military

With some help of the Willy's Mafia, I managed to get 5x 16" wheels for my CJ6 project as well as military issue canvas top.

Now we have enough to get started.

VIN Numbers for 1962 to 1971 Jeep https://www.jeepfan.com/tech/decodin...ers-1955-1971/

    http://jeepwillysworld.com/wp-conten...tification.pdf

Your Jeep VIN is 8305 213277
According to the above it would be a CJ5 (83) Open body (05)
And according to the serial# it would be a 1966 model (194163 -217501)
I think for the locally assembled military "CJ6" jeeps they used CJ5 bodies and extended it to fit a CJ6 frame. If you look in front of the rear wheels you will see where the body was extended.
