    Default What3words

I post this here as I was asked by an editor of an aviation mag to edit his article on "what3words".

I'm a retired SAAF Aviator (Navigator) and dont wish to punt anyones product but merely share with you a development to which you may not as yet have been exposed.

what3words is a really simple way to talk about location. The World is represented as a grid of 3m x 3m squares (57 billion squares) and each is assigned a unique 3 word address. It means anyone can accurately find any location and share it more quickly, easily and with less ambiguity and far fewer keystrokes than any other system.

I have a few nav apps on my iPhone and if I insert a "what3words" address, options are presented to me as to which loaded app I'd like to use.

I hope you find this as helpful & interesting as I did.

I saw it, was quite skeptical, downloaded the app, used it and ended up suitably impressed. No need to work out if north goes before east, should you use degrees, minutes, seconds or degrees.0000 or degrees minutes.000. It also gives every person with a smartphone the ability to direct anyone to where she/he is. It is still in its infancy, but as more and more people use it it will become very popular.

I will paste my reply from a previous What3words thread.

    -----------------------------------

Very interesting . I have read about it some time ago.

There are a few problems with it. See the commentary on the Openstreetmap Wiki page.
The main draw backs as per Openstreetmap...
    • The algorithm/idea is patented, very actively preventing anyone from implementing a compatible algorithm or developing anything like it as a competing standard
    • Hand-in-hand with this patent, the software for encoding/decoding is copyrighted. Any software you can find or reverse engineer from the website or mobile apps, could not be copied and re-used legally.

So it appears to be "old hat" and also a little contentious??

    Well meant though.

I get the concept, but how would it be used practically.

You would either need to know where the place is on the map, or, you would need to know what the random 3 words are that are allocated/generated for the place on the map... If you were to be looking for for a way to be directed to it.

You need to either know the location, or have the app ready to do a lookup.

That is what I find confusing.

This helps you to find a place that you must first find on a map

No, it is not there to help you find yourself, it is there to enable you to easily tell somebody else where you are.
So if you had to take out your phone right now how will you explain to somebody quickly and easily?

With W3W you just replace the traditional gps co-ordinates with the 3 words.

    Okay! Got it!

So.. not for me to find someone but for me to let someone find me..

    That can work!

If Whats up's pin-drop doesn't want to work
