Default Best camping places in the Drakensberg

    Hi,

This morning an acquaintance of my parents convinced me to go camp in the Drakensberg. Any specific campsites or resort the forum would suggest?

    Thanks

Garden Castle or Cobham would get my vote! Not the best facilities but right beneath the Berg and at the start of many wonderful trails.

That depends on the level of comfort needed or quietness preferred, etc. The berg caters for all kinds of camping.

My favourite secluded place is Highmoor. Only 7 sites, separated from each other by a hedge, awesome hikes. No electricity.

Or for a family, non parks board experience try Silverstreams Caravan Park (next to the Bushman's Nek border post). Nicely lawned, stream flowing through the site, kids play area, foofie slide...

Just bear in mind it will be damn cold at night

As some have already said it will depend on what comforts you require.

Garden Castle is very nice. Small camp, 10 sites, no electricity but they do offer a comunal freezer. Ablutions are small, 1 shower in the gents and gas geyser. Great hikes (Sleeping beauty cave, Rhino Peak, plus many more) trout fishing in small streams. The Drak Gardens hotel and all its facilities are right on your doorstep - you actually drive through the hotel resort to get to Garden Castle.

Cobham is also good. Larger campsite, no marked stands. No electricity, bigger ablutions. There is also the hikers bungalow which is like a dorm. Hikes and stream.

Vergelegen is next. Small campsite, mostly rundown sadly. Its remote, not used much except by hikers as a staging point. We drove there on a recce. The Ezemvelo officer explained they have a shower and A toilet but no hot water due to a geyser issue. Hiking, fishing, birding.

Lotheni. Is bigger campsite. Some have power. There are also a few chalets. Nice clean ablutions, Ezemvelo office/shop which is fairly well stocked. Great river, swimming, fishing, hiking etc.

I have not been in Central or Northern berg for a while, but those camps are generally bigger and more frequented and equipped as such.

Well summed up... I am sure OP will be helped by this.

Yes it all depends on preferences... For me, too much facilities eliminate the whole purpose of leaving the comfort of home and going for camping in the wild... Oh, another turn off is too many campers, busy place, famous sites, caravans and all that buzz... But it's just me, I am sure others have different taste...

Drak Gardens also has a very nice little camp site(unless it has been binned in the last year) decent ablutions and all the hotel facilities.

Mountain Splendour - excellent. 10h00 tea and scons on the house, very safe and nice for kids. They also assit to put your camping gear up. . Siverstreams Caravan Park also excellent , just take it slowly on dirt road ,21km and make sure you check out the waterfall behind customs. Camped at both places in April

Highmoor -if you can handle the cold, and if you are hopeful of snow,- and if you're lucky/well timed!

Beautiful walks of all grades, very quiet camp and hedge-screened private campsites, nice day-drives possible.

Even a very good restaurant only 20 minutes away.
