Default Twelve hours in Nairobi: what to do?

It's been a while since I spent time in Nairobi, so I'm out of touch - my daughter (19) has a twelve hour layover while waiting for a connecting flight to London. Any suggestions for something for her to do to pass the time?

It all depends on the time of the day that she will be there.

    Just remember traffic is horrendous!!!!

Spend 6 hours to get to town in traffic and then return to the airport!

Carton of cigarettes at the duty free shop

..probably better to download some e-books for tablet that she can read, unless you have Family/friends in the area.

Best thing to do is to check in at a hotel chain near the airport as a day visitor and have a swim/spa/massage etc and relax .

    Try to visit Giraffe Manor/Centre.

You don't have the full traffic load (still will be heavy traffic on the airport road) of Nairobi getting there and back as it's on the outskirts.

The traffic through Nairobi city center is indeed horrific.

Tony, I am not sure of what time of day your daughter will be laying over at the airport, but a consideration would be visiting the The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage. This is adjacent to the Nairobi National Park and would require a return taxi trip through downtown Nairobi. Feeding time and the 1 hour visits are from 11H00 each day but you need to be there by 10H00 at the latest to get a place. I would allow about two hour's taxi time each way or book a tour with transport as below.

Thanks everybody - given the traffic congestion, probably best that she either hangs out at the airport or possibly does the Giraffe Manor or David Sheldrick option. The feedback is much appreciated.

If she is on the evening flight to London, she will then be arriving in Nairobi in the morning, I presume. Is she allowed to leave the airport if she has booked her luggage all the way through to London?

If so, then definitely try to go to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage. As Stan says, the elephant viewing time is from 1100 to 1200, but get there earlier. The orphanage is within the park maintenance gate of Nairobi National Park on the Magadi Road. Then go for lunch at the Tin Roof Cafe at Langata Link on Langata South Road. Do some retail therapy there and then, if time permits along to the Giraffes on Koitobos Road just nearby. Then the bypass from the Langata area to the airport before dark.

If you need a telephone number of a good, reliable and safe driver send me a PM.

Thanks for this (and jealous of you being on the Zambezi).
She has a fairly complex flight as she booked the cheapest she can find as she has to survive the UK and Europe for the next three months on a shoestring. I'll check, but I think she's flying a combination of Emirates and Air Ethiopia.

Have lunch at the original Carnovore Restaurant in Nairobi.

You skirt town to get there and not far.

If she'll have to taxi, she should uber (those airport taxis are savage beasts), I'm spending a lot of time near the airport area of late, with the bypass you can make it to Karen (giraffe and sheldrick area) quite easily (45min to 1.15hrs each way). Must say that those sound like great suggestions!
Would even be more awesome to cut through the park! but yeah can get expensive for foreign tourist. Our aiport is not so great so layovers can be tough...
But its possible to make something out of it, picked friends on layover and did the park and lunch and they were back within 8 hours.
