    Default Mauritius.... Help please

    Hi All

We as a family is going to Mauritius next week for 7 nights.
With the final planning and packing, some questions came up...

    1. Do we exchange currency at the airport in Mauritius, or rather in SA while we still here?
    2. Dollars or Rupees better to trade with in Mauritius? Or rather only use credit card?
    3. Excursions like day trips and swimming with dolphins. Is it better to book form hotel when we are there or rather from SA before we go?
    4. Any great experiences that you can share that we mustn't miss when we are there?
    5. Anything to look out for and be aware off?

    Thanx
    Stefan

    3. Excursions like day trips and swimming with dolphins. Is it better to book form hotel when we are there or rather from SA before we go?Book there , and don't be afraid to negotiate , we ended up paying less than half of the initial price for a day trip which included dophin swim , coloured earth and turtles trip , waterfall and a hindu temple excursion

AS Bartho said on the money side. There are lots of VISA and Master Card linked ATM's that you can draw cash from with your normal cards. Just check with your banks if you need to have the cards cleared for use in foreign countries.
Hire a car and get a map from your hotel. It will cost you half of what a taxi or tour operator will cost and you will have the flexibility to do your own thing time wise. Driving in Mauritius traffic can be fun but nothing worse than what we have here in SA.

    Hi Bartho and Paul

Excellent thank you for the advice.
I was also thinking of doing the exchanges there and draw money with my fnb card there.
The dolphin swin excursion is also on my list and will book it from the hotel then.
The self drive day trip sounds like fun. Nothing like a rental for a day. LOL.

    Thanx for all the advice.

Use your card there and draw small amount of cash there for odds and ends.

Must do catamaran trip to Ile Aux Cerfs, worth the money. Must also do the Chamarel Rum Distillery tour

you are likely to pay a lot more for your card fees etc if you use a credit card to do your transactions.
rather either buy cash here or use your card to buy the cash you need there but avoid ad hoc use of RSA cards overseas.

Make sure to do rum tasting at a rum factory. We visited Chamarel - it's fancier than our Cape wine farms, and the variety is impressive!

Edit : I see dazza beat me to it...

We took cash from this side and there was no exchange fee from Rand to Rupees at the airport.

A lot of the small shops does not have card facilities. Needed to pay cash.

Go and have a beer at Kabous van der Westhuizen's pub in Grand Bay; if lucky you can watch a rugby game there on a screen floating in the bay. Marlin is the local beer and it is very good!

We will be right next to Grand Bay at La Victoria, so will certainly go to the pub.

Domaine Anna is a tourist trap, avoid.

If you want excellent & fresh seafood / chinese food, get a taxi and ask them to take you to Comlone.

You don't mention which in part of the island you'll be staying, so a bit hard to recommend a specific restaurant.

You can also do a day trip to Casela (bird & animal park), they even have lions now.

For starters... where are you staying on the island as taxis are not cheap??

Not that you cannot go anywhere for a price but if you west coast or maybe in the South you wont be popping into Black River for dinner with a 2000 Rs taxi fare.

I have been twice to Mauritius in the 1980's on the Annual IBM sales recognition events.. Loved the Fishing trips out of Black Rock near Le Morne (SWest) to Big Game Fish ..went on 3 excursions in all ..all paid for by the Co but I reckon thats an expensive activity

We’ve been there 3 times in last 7 years. Last time was last year Sept. As metioned, deep see fishing at Black River is nice. We caught some nice bonnies, marlin evaded us. There are very nice golf courses as well. We played Mont Choisy last year.
We also took a catamaran trip out to Gabriel island. Just choose a day with nice weather as the open see can get rough. If you stay in the east, it is nice to take a catamaran from Le Preskil to the islands up north. Also good golf courses up there.
Then the paplemouses in the botalical garden is nice. Also the mutliple coulor sand in the south. I would not recommend going to the market in Port Louis. I think Grand Baie is over rated. Im not a person to walk around and look at old buildings etc. Did it but did not enjoy it.
Also nice is to go and swim with dolphins.
Our first stay was at Le Preskil. I enjoyed it. Second time was La Pirogue. I found it less nice. Last time was Victoria Beachcomber. Was also nice as we could go and have lunch and drinks at the beachcomber in Grand Baie on our day out without paying extra.
I would also recommend going full board as we did it last time and I found it better not to worry about having too pay for the many coctails at check out.
    Enjoy
