    Default Fortune spare wheel stolen

So the #$%^& stole my Fortuner's spare wheel. It's never even been taken off...until now. I am thinking of replacing it with a steel rim - is it worth it and where can I find one? What about a worn tyre? Any other anti theft ideas?

My Hilux spare wheel was also stolen whilst brand new. Toyota dealer told me when I enquired that you can add a lock that only add a little time for them to remove it. Their own vehicles spares was stolen right in front of the showroom parked with there tailgate towards the showroom and a lock and it happened in 5 minutes. I use and old rim and tire that does not have cash value. They steal it to generate cash and not for use by them selves. My used setup is still intact. Good luck

I would've thought by now all bakkies have some or other locking mechanism for the spare wheel! Many many years ago when we still had our old Hilux 2.4D, the spare wheel was stolen, then not so long after that, the entire bakkie was stolen. We then bought an Isuzu KB280DT LE and that same day that we took delivery, had someone come out to install a Solex (how's that for memory) spare wheel lock. Not two weeks later, after spending a few hours at the V&A Waterfront, we find that someone had indeed tried to steal the spare wheel (was hanging loose against the lock) in the underground parking area - they had taken the little rubber cover that goes over the access hole. I of course replaced that rubber cover and some weeks later, same frikken story when parked there again - didn't bother replacing that rubber cover again... My current Isuzu has a locking cover that goes onto that access hole, but to be honest, I actually wonder how effective this would really be when someone that has pillaging intent tried his luck! As for your question, it's simply a spare wheel, so there is no reason why it needs to be exactly the same as the other four, so a steel wheel with an old slightly worn tyre is fine.

My Fortuner have a wheel nut bolting the spare to the chassis. It is one of those nuts that requires a special socket that inserts into the bolt with a unique matching male/female pattern mating the two.

I thought it was standard issue on all Fortuners of late but mine may have been added by the previous owner. It is a brilliant idea.
