Default Road from Nxai South camp to Kumago

We will be travelling from South camp to Kumago in Sept towing a BushLapa. Is it advisable to do that going via the Park or is the longer route via tar better?
I don't mind the sand but I just don't know how bad is it when towing!!

We last did that route in the reverse direction a couple of years ago; the sand was not too bad. Oncoming traffic is more of a problem as it is a definite "tweespoor" and not always easy to move over if both are towing.

We did Makgadigadi in Jan and the only really deep sand is down by the Boteti river, we towed a very light trailer and hardly felt the difference. It is quite flat and featureless until you get to the Boteti.

If you can handle the sand on the Nxai side, the Makgadigadi side will not be a problem
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

Remember Makgadigadi has 2 entrance gates in the north on Nxai pan's side.

The track from the old gate to Khumaga is generally a hard surface and not a problem towing.

The track from the newer Phuhududu has some serious sand and I would not like to tow there.

Frans, can you perhaps post an image of the map? Is it T4A? Unfortunately on my phone at the moment.

Phuhududu and the old gate is about 70 km apart. Old gate being almost directly north of Njuca hills and about 30 km from Gweta.

I still don't think the sand going via Phuduhudu Gate is that bad, the problem remains oncoming traffic. Most drivers are very accommodating but there is always the "problem child". We did not encounter much traffic.

In May 2013 we went northbound from Khumaga to Baines Baobabs and in April 2016 it was southbound from Nxai Pan South Camp to Khumaga, in both cases I was towing a Mini-Metalian. I would not hesitate to tow my Sundowner on that route, as a previous post said the road between South camp and the A3 is much worse.

Yes, that's the one. We have been through that point last year May when we came from Tree Island.

I would not take that road to Khumaga, unless you want to spend time first at Tree Island / Njuca Hills...

Like McCowell says, the road from South Camp is worse than the road from Phuduhudu to Khumaga....

    Hi,

we did that bit within the last two weeks. I couldnít see much difference in terms of sand between South Gate and A3 and going from Phuduhudu to Khumaga. The sand made no problem at all. We didnít tow though.

Only thing is really the oncoming traffic on the later road, whereas the other one is more than wide enough to pass.

    Cool Frans.

Well, if everyone does not find the sand via Phuhududu so bad, I will not argue.8)

I see it took us 2hr 50min; to the office at Khumaga, it includes a few minutes at the 2 gates too. We were 4 vehicles and 3 of us were towing, 2 with trailers and one with an Imagine trailvan. This was in April and we left at 0730 so we could beat the hot sand.

The ideal would be to stay in the 2 left tracks but unfortunately does not always work out like that, as you can see, here we are in the middle tracks.

The staff at the gate will advise which road is easier to travel. BUT in 2013 when we went to Baines Baobabs, they advised us to take the northerly loop into Baines, which we did; however when we came southbound we used the shorter more direct route and thought it was better, so you take your chances. (We did however see 2 lions on the northerly route)

I just did that road last week - From Nxai Pan South Camp t Khumaga via Phududu Gate.

Honestly, the road out of Nxai Pan is more horrendous than the road from Phududu to Khumaga. The sand is really not that bad. Yes, it is narrow but I left Nxai Pan early in the morning so I was at Phududu Gate by 8.30am which meant I did not get any traffic from the opposite side.

I was not towing but do not see a problem if you have a Bush Lapa.

Which gate is directly opposite the Nxai Pan exit? Doing the trip in August. Haven't decided the route.
